I am over a friend's house he has a pair of used DSP5ks 24 bit I showed him how to hook them up, but one problem he doesn't have a CD player, or cable TV yet. Right now we have two iPhones and two iPads. How to get the music out from the iPad to the DSP5ks?

iPhone and iPad out is analogue. Unless you have a iPhone dock with a digital output or a standalone ADC, you are probably stuffed.

He can buy a serviceable (not high quality but works) DVD player for under $20, I have a Sony DVR SR200P.
It's extra (redundant?) and though I'd sell it on eBay it's worth very little there, so your friend could easily work up an interim solution.

I just need to play some music right now because I recommended the DSP 5ks. He can live another day I hope and now it's time for some Turkey.

An iPod or iMac camera connection kit will give you a USB connection. Then use a USB-->SDIF converter.

Meridian used to sell a "reverse DAC" , the MPMAX 221, that would convert L/R analog, high level headphone, or optical into digital out, suitable for older style Meridian DSP speakers. I haven't seen them too often on eBay or audiogon.... I listened to one a couple of years ago when I was auditioning a pair of DSP7000's. Duncan's info for MPMAX 221

Does he have a smart TV with an optical out?
Opt to coax converter would give him a very basic digital in.
Long term a 562 would be a cheap multi source converter for digital in.

Hi guys thanks for the help. My friend is borrowing my SBT for now and he ordered one of his own already. The DSP 5ks are working fine and he's a happy customer/friend.
