I spent a lot of time listening to different controllers and different cards, and thought the differences between them to be rather subtle compared to the improvement from a linear PS.

The G68/LPS is definitely better than the 861v4/SMPS.

I haven't heard a stock 861v6 in an analogue system, but from what people say I'd expect the 861v4/LPS to be better.

In fact I'd expect the G68/LPS to give the v6 a run for its money.

Mmm, I guess that means I need to dust off my plans to go linear on my G68...

I've now done a fetch for both the 861 and HD621 and have built a config file up to the point of speaker calibration.

At what point do I upload the files? Presumably before speaker cal, but there is no point in the breadcrumb trail so far that prompts me to do that.

I've also got questions about bass management. I thought that speaker size was a number on Meridian equipment, but I'm only given the Large/Small choice.

If I choose Large for my mains, small for the centre, and Bass-neutral, it seems from the diagram that only center channel goes to the sub, but the help file says that all bass goes to the sub in that configuration. Do you know what actually happens? Maybe I should choose all speakers as small.

Does anyone want to look at my config file?

Fetch/Store
First, a word of caution with "Fetching", it is ok to get your initial setup from the processor but after that don't use this feature as not all the setup comes back. It is far better to treat the Mconfig .msl file(s) as the master source for your configuration and only store it back to the processor. Also when you make significant changes make a copy and rename the file, this way you build an archive of your configs over time. (e.g. 2013-12-19 861, HD621 Initial Setup.msl)

Once you have a "first cut" Mconfig store it in the processor et al. Then you can proceed to refine with the speaker calibration and MRC, storing back to the processor as required.

Bass management
If a speaker is defined as large the system will not redirect any bass that is intended for that channel.

If a speaker is defined as small, then the system will redirect a proportion of the bass away from that speaker. The amount redirected is controlled by the cut off frequency.

The "Bass flow" arrows in Mconfig do display what the routing will be. Note there are different layouts for Music, Movie (2ch) and Movie (multi-channel).

I think a lot of people feel uncomfortable about setting their physically large speakers a 'small', but if you want to unload some of the bass from them then this is what is required. It's where the cut off frequency is set that determines how much is redirected.

I'll have a look at your config file, just email it over to me and a description of what you wish to achieve.
