Hi there,

After 4 years of not having HDMI input to my 568.2, having recently purchased the cambridge audio BD751 Bluray machine, I feel it's time to explore what the true HD audio formats are capable off as I currently only get Core, which sounds very good anyway.

My question is, is the HD621 compatible with my 568.2 (non MM)?

You don't have the digital multichannel inputs on the 568.2, you would need the MM version for that. That being the case, the HD621 could strip the multichannel audio from the HDMI and give you four SPDIF outputs. Ideally you would put these into a processor, so that can use M's DSP for various effects and bass management BUT you can just run Meridian speakers from the HD621.

This is sort of "frowned on" as you miss out on quite a bit, HOWEVER, if you're playing Skyfall at good volume through 5 DSPs, it's really a very impressive movie experience (and hi-res film tracks are stunning).

You can do the same thing with a modified Oppo using a Vanity card.

It would help if you put the rest of your system in your profile to allow more accurate advice.

Whilst possible, in practical terms this is a non-starter.

No SPL calibration.
No Distance timing calibration.
No ...

To use a HD621 a processor with multi-channel digital input is required.

Carl

I think "non-starter" is a little hard. If you're going down the M3, pop in for a listen...

There is a fair amount of calibration available on the audio set up on the Oppo, speaker distances, trim, speaker size/bass management.

Is all that calibration stuff applicable to the digital output over HDMI?

I temporarily ran an HD621 in stereo direct into the speakers and it the upsampling provided a welcome upgrade over CD quality which would have otherwise been the best I could have got.

Maybe not as the handshaking influences output but best to say I don't know.

I've concluded that you need a very good processor not to loose a little SQ from processing, so going straight to speakers has one plus factor ( two if you include cost...). Yes I know that's not why we're here...
