Looking for a pristine 598 with MSR. UK only please.

There are different versions of 598. You might want to clarify which you are looking for.

Yes, that's a good question... I would prefer analogue with RCA and optical aux. output but would accept Component or SCART as well.

I don't think any 598 offered optical output, only coax. I think there were far fewer analogue models out in the wild than digital output versions. IIRC any version with "A" in the name would suit, if you are not too bothered about the video output connections.

PS A look at Duncan's Meridian Info (link at the top of the page) will confirm the various model versions.

I think you want a 598DS, SCART out but MrMeridian is correct about the optical out, all versions are coax only. You could always convert the coax to optical using a convertor, there are lots of them about these days, do you not have a coax input available?

You need to update your signature with your current kit list, it helps us answer your questions better if we know what other kit you have.

598DS = digital scart. OP will want 598AS.

I quoted the "analogue" version after looking at the User Guide for the 598, it shows this version with what appears to be an optical out, also Mr Meridians guide shows a rear photo of the AS with optical out again.
However, this is not an essential, only a preference as I realise it would be a rare find. In truth any version will do as I will be using the digi output (coax or optical) into my Behringer DAC and on to a selection of head phone amps mainly for CD listening when use of speakers is not practical.

I have shown this interest in a 598 after a friends recommendation but I would ask you experts if a 596 would be any different or better for CD listening?

I am new to Meridian gear and find the array of units produced quite daunting so any advice is welcomed.

I have both 598DP and a 596.

The main difference is that the 598 plays DVD-A and I think is the later version.

Both are excellent at CD, although I think the 598 being younger is possibly better.

There is one on eBay at present and they go for shockingly small amounts of money bearing in mind that they are very close in design and performance to a 508/588, in particular the 588, which has super star status and a price tag to match. With the 598, you get 95-98% of performance and DVD-A at around �325-350, depending on condition. The original price of a 598 in 2002 was in excess of �3,000.

The last 598 sold on eBay for around �345, well it didn't sell, the seller came back to HH and sold to a fellow HH as the ebayer didn't complete.

In my humble opinion this is the best place to purchase excellent gear and a reasonable price.

I have noted the current eBay item and your price indications are useful.

One thing I have noted however, is that the 598 does not have the analogue audio outputs of the 596 and that is a facility I would probably use from time to time.

I suggest you check out Duncan's Meridian Info site and look at the pictures in relation to 596/598.

It would appear that the 598AP has left and right analogue output along with optical and coax digital outputs - exactly what you are looking for.

Yes thanks Jon. I have seen that one, it is a re-list, as first time around it failed to reach its reserve which must have been sky high!

I'd rather deal with someone who has a realistic idea of its value!
