Now that I think of it. Active differential EM field technology as used by Synergestic Research in their active "Tranquility Base" is probably coming into the components soon. Its effect is reapeatable and you can just turn it on and off with a switch. Lowering the noise floor is a great use of it.

Differential EM field technology is not just for space applied technology. Lowering the noise floor is a great use of it.

I think there are some that go to great lengths. Naim is one, with its separate power supplies. Esoteric CD players go through great lengths to isolate power supplies and the analog stages in their players.

Then there is this drool worth setup! Pass X dual Chassis Amps!

Don't get me wrong, I love my Meridian gear. But there is always a way to make it better!

Is Differential EM field technology what Nordost uses with their QRT Field Generators? They are pricey!

If Meridian determined years ago that removing external mechanical vibration has a revelatory effect on sound quality they should by now have designed substantial immunity into their products. I didn't really mean build-in an isolation platform.

I'm not sure about the cost element. This gear is extremely expensive anyway. Would it really make a lot of difference to add vibration damping, improve wire dressing etc.

Alternatively, Meridian could just supply the external support "in the box" as part of their equipment and provide this performance improvement. It would probably be easier than spending huge amounts of time developing, for example, apodising filters.

+1 from me on this. I like the way the MD and MS600 work but their build quality is poor. I can see the light behind the power button via the gap between the case and the actual button. If you pay a premium price then you expect a solid build. Check out the build on the Aurender or the lumin. M is falling behind in my view.

Naim additionally claim to be obsessive about cable dressing so as to achieve enhanced sound quality.

Naim also use pucks on their players. I wish Meridian would do the same. Their high-speed rotation of discs often produces very audible sounds of vibration because discs are not made to very tight specifications.

And some of the Marantz copper-shielded players were modestly priced compared with Meridian. And they claim to have hand selected components for their KI models.

But the more you reduce the noise floor by using better quality kit the more you gain from those minor benefits.

I don't think you would like a Marantz CD player when you are a Meridian lover. Marantz claims alot. Like the KI PEARL there where only 500 made for each component. Well you see them everywhere. My geuss is that they produced alot more.

The copper shielding they apply is mostly for better ground. The Marantz players are not connected to the earth of the house electrical supply. They better can make a design that is grounded. If you have a good electrical group in your house for your audio it does more then the copper shielding.

Copper shielding, especially from the Japanese manufactures, has been used like forever. It's nothing new
I had a top line Sony CD player 30 years ago that used it extensively.

I always thought the KI Marantz sound was rather harsh, nothing like Meridian. But I found the steps they took to try and achieve better sound were very interesting.

Is it me but, whilst interesting, this thread seems to have gone way OT?

Well, the original post was about the effects of an isolation platform. Most of the subsequent posts relate to improving the vibration immunity of equipment and a few are about the effects of EM immunity.

Not really OT, I think.

I agree that the build quality is not as good as one might expect at this price level. My MD600 disk drives can vibrate at times - I thought I might have a faulty example at first. So I have added damping under the MD600, including under the drives, and my ms600 sits on top with dampers in between. The damping does in my opinion make a difference to the sound, especially noticeable in the reproduction of voice, which sounds more open. Different types of support influence the sound too, as someone else previously said earlier in the thread.
