My G91A stopped playing DVDs and DVD-As recently - I load a disc and close the disc tray and the display reads "Loading" for about 20 seconds and then displays "No disc". If you listen closely you can faintly hear what I assume is the read mechanism chuntering away. It still plays CDs and CDRs ok.

As it's well out of warranty I lifted the lid and measured the power supply output voltages - which are +5.2v, +12.5 and -12.5 - not quite bang on spec' but close enough for me to think it's ok.

Does anyone know what the fault might be? My own guess is that the laser mechanism is on the way out. I'm hoping this is something I can swap out myself.

Cheers, Roger.

Yep laser mechanism, it's been discussed before but I can't recall if a G91 was in the mix. Try a Google Search of the site it should reveal a few hits.

Carl

Roger - had a similar problem myself - you'll need a new drive. DSL 720 or DSL 710A will both work

good luck

Carl, Robert,

Many thanks for your quick replies. All I have to do now is source one of these drives as it looks like they're obsolete.

Cheers, Roger.

Anyone know if this would do the trick?

DV9929B substitute for DSL-710A, DSL-720A

I have a G91A myself and was advised by a fellow hitchhiker (JobSeeker) to buy a replacement just in case.
