High all.

Last night I was listening to U2's "All that you can't leave behind album" and one of Oasis's albums and I really enjoyed the sound quality on my M80. I think these albums have a pretty low DR range and are compressed!

I also have an album with a high DR range of around 16 and it just doesn't pull me in as much as some of my other albums!

I always used Audacity to measure spectrograms but now I just let my ears decide and not take to much notice of "measurements".

How do you feel about Dynamic Range, is it all in the head?

Best
Danny

Poorly recorded music you like is better than well recorded music you hate.

All the best,

Steve.

Higher DR versions of the same music definitely sound better. The original and re-issues of Off The Wall being a good example in my colelction. I do have a recording of an unsigned band that has a DR of 16 but sounds awful so it is certainly no guarantee. It is just one of many things that make a good recording.

Just my 2 cents but high DR gives you the choice of turning up the volum
The new ReMasters often has as low as DR 2-4 and the ofte peak over 0dB(Clipping). Many of the new discovery ReMaster of Pink Floyd has peak over 0dB (Clipping),
I use IZotope RX2 advanced to check all tracks before importing into Sooloos.
Using iZotope to DeClipp if possible. Before and after DeClipping

The YouTube clip is a great clear simple explanation of the problem, it's a shame we are preaching to the converted here. cheers, Chris smile

High DR certainly isn't a guarantee, but low DR is a limiting factor on how good a recording can sound.

In my experience, low DR recordings can sound better than high DR recordings on small systems. And, at risk of an argument, I'd include the M80 as a small system.

Not that Duncan, the other one. No, not that one either.

I had a great time yesterday on my M80.

I downloaded Audacity a few months back and I've been checking what Albums in my collection have been recorded loudly and which were recorded quietly (which had really high DR Range) and the Albums I was initially dissapointed with that had high DR Range I was suddenly astounded with after turning my volume up to around 78, 79.

The Albums that we're recorded very loudly i.e. "The Essential - The Clash" I turned volume down to around 62, 63 and was also astounded how good it sounded loads of little details and effects I was missing it out on because I was initially playing it way to loud, by turning it down it seems less is more with Albums recorded loudly.

Best

Now I'm wondering what 3200's sound like.

Surely not twice as good as an M80?

Regards
Danny

Danny, be warned - a question like that starts very innocently. Several years later and many '000's later you'll wonder why you ever asked it wink

No, not twice as good; they are 10x better!
Seriously, the 3200s are just immense little speakers.

However, some 24/96 5000s are where the real value is FS: Meridian MK1 DSP5000 96/24 & D2500 - Big Price Drop

Please buy them as I keep looking at them every day but I'm skint!
Daughter starts Uni in 2 weeks and I am now officially broke for 3 years. frown
