Help! my beloved 598 started blinking "loading" in the middle of a movie and hasn't quit since. I've since turned all power off and removed disc manually. when i try to play any other disc - same thing. "loading" and then unresponsive to input. Any thoughts short of sending in for repairs??

Once had the same problem on an 800. It required a disk drive replacement. Hope your problem is different, easier to fix.

Seems as if drive/laser has passed away. Saw this DSL-720A full assembly supposedly new, from Taiwan. Expensive at $180 but you could also ring M Koval for assistance.

I also had this issue on my 596P - but only with DVD's CD's played fine.
Since then, Meridian have replaced the drive - it may be that for you too I'm afraid.
Amazingly, the issue has returned with DVD's. But I am not too fussed any longer since I use the PS3 to watch DVD's. It's built in upscaler gives a significantly better picture off a DVD than the Meridian.
The 596P is now relegated to CD duties but I have to say that my SB Touch (with tweaks) now gives a better sound than the 596!
