Enterprise drives are designed to run continuously. The reliability figures wont be achieved if the drive is powered up and down all the time. Consumer drives might in fact tolerate power cycling more than the enterprise drives. However, enterprise drives usually have longer warranties than their consumer equivalents. Regards, Graham

I'm puzzled by the root notion that users should be using enterprise drives, when the Ensembles come equipped with desktop drives. Mine had 1TB Hitachi Deskstars that I could have picked up for ~$100 at the time. Yeah, you can argue that enterprise drives are more reliable, etc., etc., but when an OEM doesn't equip with that class, then how important can it be? And "standard" storage is so cheap anyway, why pay more for the reliabilty that enterprise drives purportedly offer? You ought to be backing up anyway, so while the reliability argument has some rational basis, enterprise drives do fail. But non-enterprise drives don't fail so often as to (in my opinion) warrant spending more to get the enterprise drives.

I know there are many here who think that enterprise drives are the only way to go. I've had a conversation with Tech Support in NY and they reiterated (see below) the 'green' drive recommendation. I was also under the impression that M would only support recommended drives, which is the reason why I went with the 'green' ones. I have four in production and haven't had any issues. Recommended hard disc drives
Meridian recommends Samsung HD204UI, Seagate ST32000542AS, Hitachi 0F12117 and Western Digital WD20EARS, or other comparable low power ("green") 3.5" SATA drives. We will update our recommendations on suitable HDD choices from time to time and as availability of larger capacity 3.5" SATA drives changes. Reg
