Having had the 861 v4 back for a while now I have been trying to get the room correction running. I have been unsuccessful so far, with the computer unwilling to talk to the 861 with the room correction program. I've spoken to Meridian but the problem persists. So I'm wondering has anyone here got a v4 yet and been successful getting it to work. I'll probabaly have to get onto them again next week if i have no luck.

Peter

Are you haveing problems communicating with the 861 in general ? Or only with the room-EQ module.

I can use the setup prog without problems it just seems to a problem when the rc prog is run. Cannot even run the mike test. I'll have to lug my main computer from my office and try that incase its just a laptop problem.

Room correction is working for me. I have re-done it many times trying different positions, different mics, different crossovers, etc.

When you press the mic test button, does that fail?

Which OS are you using?

It works well and sounds great.

In my room, it only used 3 filters out of 60. That was before I installed the next part of my soffit system. I need to re-run.

I suggest you buy a copy of the AES paper to understand how they correct. They are not pulling down the peaks but rather correct the RT60 time of the below 250 Hz.

You can manually pull down peaks all you want. I have been playing around with that.

What I like most is the before and after graphs you can view. You can see both at the same time. You can also setup a number of different profiles.

You can create a profile with just you in the room. You can create one with guests in the room. (many bodies may change the results.)

If you have DSP speakers (6Ks and below), you are really going to want to the new speaker sofware.

The new layout of presets works well with 4.0. It might be me, but it feels like the time to change between presets (PL II to Trifield as an example) is shorter.

I have used the IA40 and IA00 to measure the room. I have never tried taking out the IA00.

The demo at HE this weekend in SF used almost all 60 filters because of the room. They had 7 DSP 8ks running for DVD-A, it was very cool!

Even if you don't use the room correction, 4.0 is just much better. It is hard to explain, you have to use it to understand.

The latest Meridian.exe is so much more relaible. I have yet to have it fail a transfer. Prior to that, it would fail 100% of the time when I wanted to store. I would always have to power cycle 861 and restart Meridian.exe before I could get past 50%. I use to keep a laptop running 98 just for this. (I have been running on NT for 10 years, I hate 9x based products.)

One of the cool things with 4.0 is that you can now get all of the LFE channel. If you have a mono sub setup and set the xover to 80 Hz, you would loose the LEF above 80 Hz. I believe this is a THX requirement. With V4, you can now get that back.

I believe Lexicon also does this, for now. All of the other THX boxes throw away the LFE above the xover point.

Sounds great !
I can't wait or V4 as Iv'e had a lot of reliability problems lately with 861 V3 and 598DC which I'm hoping the extra DSP will sort out.
My system regularly loses the ability to upsample (often only solved by continually re-typing the unit) and also when changing or repeating chapters on a DVD the display will read MHR Movie6 but no sound ? Only by stopping/reloading the disc or changing to a different soundtrack brings the sound back !
As for the room , it's going to be some time before I can finalise the layout I would like so any help Room Correction can give the better.
Stacey,any possibility of 'Secrets' doing a V4 861 re-review ? So many developments recently it'd be a godsend !

Manus

Stacey:

I'm happy to hear that you too used few filters. After running room correction my setup only required 1 out of 60 filters for the center channel only. My dealer had warned me about some systems requiring all 60 filters so I was concerned that I had done something wrong. I didn't think my room was very good given the fact that there are 20 foot ceilings and an irregular back wall.

Do you have any tips about the way you ran the tests. Where and how did you position the microphone?

Thanks, Alan

Stacey - great info but where did you get the new DSP f/w from. It used to be bundled with the allinone.exe but doesn't appear to be these days. What's its version number?

Thanks

Graham

Stacey,

Do you have a link to the purchase page for the AES paper?
