An interesting thought, it depends on the transformer design spec. Some further thoughts from a guy who knows about transformers lower down on this page

http://avondaleaudio.com/?s=fidelity (Thanks Les) I wonder who will be first to upgrade the stock transformer? wink

Maybe our collective mutterings about the absence of shielding may have triggered a nerve? (if only!)

Anyone have their Meridian to English Dictionary handy??

I wonder if ID41 will be available for 861 (and 808)?

Chris

Both good questions. I assume there would be space in the 861 for a torroid-based power supply (no clue how large such a thing would be)? Will be interesting to find out what the differences are between ID40 and ID41, and whether the latter replaces the former.

Well presumably you would need an external filter to take out the transformer hum which has ended up in the digital signal?... wink

Understand the reason for the Smiley..........but even if this had some basis in reality, you'd have to wonder why the ID41 wasn't in the Ruby 808.3??

Rhetorical questions all.......

I reckon the 818 has the "never to be used again" special power supply of the Ruby 808.3.

I'd have thought there was potential for Meridian to roll this out as a general 800 series upgrade in a couple of years' time, after the 818 has had a period of exclusivity. It could be a good exercise for dealers to get customers back through the door again, and an earner for them too. I'd much prefer this PSU in my 861 and 808.

It would have been nice to have MRC in the machine, but as it stands, it looks like the machine to have with a pair of 8ks in a two channel rig.

Cheers

George

+1. If I didn't already have an 808 the 818 would be a perfect solution as I rarely spin discs since I got Sooloos.

It's all the units spare from the Ruby stuff that didn't sell... albeit with cheaper transformers that no require shielding wink

No MRC? Gutted - it's even got a proper power supply! I was really hoping for MRC... maybe it'll arrive with an upgrade - and if it does I'll buy one!!

An AES/EBU input would have been nice as would an HDMI input/output pass through but at least the USB input is a welcome addition...
Which Meridian do you have?
Robert
