I finally found a local dealer who installed the firmware update for my G68ADV today. When I tried it out at home after the firmware installation I found that the left main speaker is now missing from all presets. I've triple checked the cables and connections.

If anyone has had a similar problem, would you please respond and iadvise me what the likely problem might be.

Assuming I will now need to run the configuration program, would someone share with me a reminder of the key step(s) on how to run the configuration program without affecting my RC settings. I am not all that technically proficient and it was a miracle that I was finally able to run RC and create several profiles some time ago. Many thanks, Bruce

Hi Bruce,

After any firmware reload, it is recommended to re-type the unit and then re-configure.

Do you still have your Mconfig .msl files saved?
If so great, just fire up Mconfig and use the saved config which contains the setup and MRC data and filter profiles.

If you don't have these you will have to setup from scratch and re-run the MRC process again.

Regards,
Carl

Thanks Carl. I will need to run the configuration again.

I've now switched around all my speaker connections and figured out I am not receiving any signal from one of the modules of my amp - to the left speaker. Perhaps a fuse blew. That being the problem area, I apologise for the original posting and suggest we let this thread conclude now. Thanks, Bruce

No apologies necessary... If I had a nickel for every moment (or post) like that, I would most certainly be a kilionnaire wink

I've have never ever done that in 10 years of Meridian and wouldn't recommend it unless there is a problem.

I'm still running some config data from my 861 on my G68.

Do you delete all your files for Windows or Mac update and recreate them !!

I'm not saying it is a bad option here but I certainly wouldn't do it routinely just for a firmware update.

If the speakers were updated, my guess is it's the speaker(s) not set up right.

Because the G68 treats speakers in Pairs. There is no way to have a Right with no Left.

Or someone buggered a cable getting to the Back of the G68 for the update.

Which speaker is fed first the left or the right? (Assuming DSP)

If it's Analog, it's probably just a loose cable.

Carl is not suggesting re-configuring from scratch. He means re-running config then reloading config data from file.

ReTyping after firmware update is important as it initialises all data areas to known good values which. Some data areas may potentially change location or meaning between firmware versions so re typing prevents any potential issues that may be caused by data persisting from one version to another.

Thanks all. (John, for empathizing with my panicked original post, Carl again, George and Ian for your guidance). I'm pretty clear on how to proceed with configuation. The precipitating issue with loss of signal from my left speaker does now appear to be a problem with module in my Bryston 9BST amp. At worst, I can rely on the fabulous Bryston folks to help me solve the problem. Best, Bruce

I'm just reading what I saw. I know what Reconfig means to me and I expect others would read it likewise.

That said, Retyping and then reloading the config doesn't really do much. When you "Upload" that is a "Custom Typing". The "Factory" typing does nothing if you plan to "Type it" again with your "Custom" type (a.k.a. MConfig)

So if you want to reupload your config, go for it. Retyping (to a factory config) first does absolutely nothing (unless you do want to start from scratch and fetch that and start configuring).

Also I think not a single parameter has changed in the Config since the G68 was introduced. I switch firmware frequently to compare things and I never bother sending an MConfig configuration each time. I've even gone backwards with 7 year old firmware (including partial firmware) and it all runs just fine.

What you (or Carl) is describing does happen on things like Cell phones and Routers. But I think Meridian does a fairly good job in how they manage the embedded design as well and has not made many significant architecture changes since the introduction of MRC. There has never been any such recomendation from Meridian that I have seen saying you need to Reload your configuration. If that was required to properly run I think Merdian/Dealers would be in big trouble.

Most the time if something does go wrong it's due to communication problems where a Firmware is erased and only partially written, wrong firmware, a hardware problem existed before you started or the system wasn't quite configured right in the first place.

Hmmm...

I was thinking about what George has said and he must be right. If Meridian are encouraging users to take their gear to the dealer for firmware updates, you wouldn't necessarily take your config file and laptop with you so that the dealer could retype to a standard and then reload your settings after the update.

I think you have to read the next paragraph as well where I ask the OP if he still have his .msl files.

Though I do take you point that most of the time you will probably get away with not reloading the config.
However, do remember the context of this thread" "No Left Main Speaker [after firmware update].

Which imediately says to me is very unlikely the processor.

If it was center/sub, or fronts or rears maybe. But no left with right says it's outside processor. The processor does most everything in pairs.

The instruction given to me direct from highly regarded people in Meridian support was to reTYPE all units immediately following a firmware upgrade. I have simply passed this information on.

It may not be absolutely necessary on all upgrades, and some assume that it is performed automatically when using some tools, but for the sake of a few seconds, its a belt and braces approach that may well prevent problems down the line.
