Jon - I'm in Wellington and the local Soundline guys said that they would be happy to either come to me or to for me to bring in my G68 - they quoted NZ$95 for doing the upgrade at my place. Give Darrin from Soundline a call on 021 270 3939 and he should be able to give you a hand.
Cheers ..... Kent

Here's why I have a problem with this firmware situation. I got a quote from one dealer...who is/was 60 miles away to update my DSP6000's...$600! Because he has to charge travel and pay tech!!! Are you kidding me? Then, to add insult to injury, he said if I brought the speakers in, he would do it for the small sum of $200!
Way to go with the gouging! G

This is just ridiculous! I can understanding charging something for coming to your house, but to charge $200 if you bring it in, for something that takes 5 mins per speaker is outrageous. This is supposed to be a free update!

No doubt you will get the firmware for, ahem, considerably under $200. When you've done that, get back to your dealer and let him know that he's just lost business for being too greedy.

I'm having difficulty in Manassas VA finding a dealer to install the firmware update for my G68ADV. I purchased the G68 off Audiogon so do not have a dealer relationship for this. I contacted a "premium partner" 30 miles away from whom I bought a Meridian 565 and a Bryston amp eleven years ago, and they indicated that they had received the firmware but had not installed any yet and would be prepared to schedule upgrades very soon. Three weeks later they have not responded to two subsequent emails or my phone call seeking to set up an appointment.
I also contacted Meridian dealers 70 miles and 128 miles distant (this is in the metropolitan area with the worst auto traffic density in the U.S. and travel times are significantly longer than one might expect). Both dealers were friendly and responsive but neither indicated they have any experience installing Meridian firmware. I was concerned when I was informed by one dealer that they tried out the Meridian firmware website after my call, experienced an interruption and that I should be prepared to accept the risk if they had to "force" acceptance of the file on my unit and my unit is damaged. I would also need to leave my G68 with them for up to a week.
While I am certain I will settle soon on accepting some significant inconvenience to eventually get the firmware installed, I sent an email to Meridian today expressing my opinion that the options I am facing for the new dealer delivery system for updates can be quite inconvenient and urged Meridian to consider whether it could improve the options for Meridian owners like myself. I am still looking for a reasonable way to get the firmware update.

Hi BruceN,
Please take the oft-repeated advice and contact one of the dealers who frequent this forum. You don't have to have the problems you are describing.

Thanks Nic. Good advice. Since my post yesterday, I have fortunately received help as you suggested. Bruce

I, too, had issues and someone was nice enough to help me out. Frankly, I can't understand what the problem with the current crop of dealers is!
I can understand wanting to charge a fee for coming out to someone's house and taking time even in the store. What I don't get is all these warnings and making it seem like the firmware upgrade is the most complicated task every put upon them.
With the G68 it was as simple as plugging in the cable, doing a read to make sure communication was good. Clicking "firmware update" from the config menu and letting it go. Reset and done.
What's the big deal?

Just got it installed. Dealer wasn't as communicative as I would like, but it's a fait accompli now.
I agree with you (Brian B.) about the "it's so complicated mantra". I put together lengthy procedures for large complexes of systems and then execute them. Getting ready to start another round tonight. I'm pretty sure I could handle this, and maybe even recover it from a "bricked" state.
I understand there are dependencies etc but some of these could be handled with code if the right data is available.
Oh well, that's the choice of the mothership and you can't fight city hall.

I think I'm holding a new record!? I have to drive 600km or send my equipment in + pay 300 - 400 for the update (depending on the age of the processor ). I own a G68J and a G68XXV. So I probably need help, too. I looked for a German dealer on this forum but I haven't found one. PS I already bought G68J, 3x G56, G57 and G08 from this dealer. And plasma TV, speakers,...!!!

I think Meridian's idea of getting us to form a relationship with a dealer with a view to encouraging further sales is, in too many cases, back-firing.
Who will want to have any further dealings with a dealer who charges excessively for a ten minute job when you take the equipment to them. Surely good business sense dictates that when equipment is taken to their premises the updates are applied FOC in the interests of good and productive customer relations.
If Meridian is to continue with this form of software updating it really does need to take stock of its dealers.
Fortunately, there are some excellent Meridian dealers; just a question of sorting the wheat from the chaff.

Pitt, Contact HiFi Eins in Severinstr., Cologne - as you're in NRW. They're an approved dealer & are exceptionally helpful. Any problems, send me a "pm" as I'm in Thailand at the moment - I've scheduled my update for Saturday when I'm back....
