The unfortunate part is that a standard female-straight-female cable is often visually indistinguishable from a null female-crossover-female cable and many box of bits contain the straight cable from when we connected to external modems. Many people not use to straight and crossover cables also confuse female/female cables as meaning null modem when it's the non visible internal wiring that determines the type.
I leave the null-modem cables that came with each device firmly connected to the back of each device and plug each, as needed, into the PC. If I need a USB adapter or RS-232 extension, I can just add it in line.

With your null modem cable connected, it's always good practice to turn the rear power switch off and on again to sync your Meridian to the computer or device. I've always had to do this with all my Meridian gear.

Good luck,

Keith

Hi guys!

Sorry its been a while. I've been away & then it was all family & christmas etc..

I've bought that cable advisted by PeterRW & now the LEGACY PROGRAM talks to my 568.2 thanks!!

I managed to get the old settings off the 568.2 & they was all way off from my own system. The speakers were set to 17meters lol. I've changed it all now. But when it came to uploading the new settings to the 568.2 it would only go to 50% & then it seems to crash. I tried this a few times with the same result & to be honest I got quite frustrated with it. I've tried it a few times since & same problem. However yesterday I tried it again & when it gets to 50% I turned off the 568.2 & back on again & then it went upto 100% success! Now when I do an upload it works to 100% without having to power off or touching anything.

So now i've managed to upload all my new settings. Well so I thought. The only thing that won't seem to change now is I've tried to set my DSP5000c centre speaker to DSP 96/24 SMALL rather thank LARGE as I have a small ish room. Although it says it has uploaded 100% of the new settings when I try & fetch the new settings it still says DSP LARGE 96/24.
Might seem like a silly thing to worry about but thought I'd mention it as there's probably a simple solution to fix it.

DSP5000c Firmware - 5.040
I bought the centre from a fello Hitchhiker who advertised it as 96/24 so I assume its not a problems with that.

Thanks guys for all your help!
Happy New Year!!

Marc,

Glad that you're getting somewhere. A lot of folks here do not like using the fetched settings to upload changes to their machines.

Could you try changing the settings using a completely clean config file? See if that makes a difference.

Setting your speakers to "small" just diverts the bass from them to either your sub or other speakers which are set to "large", it doesn't have anything to do with your room size. As such you might want to leave all your fronts set to "large".

You might want to get your firmware updated in the DSPs you have. Talking of which, what is your full set up? Are your DSP5ks also 24/96? What size are your analogue rears, could they also be set to "large"?

The Fetch never seems to be the same as what is on the unit, it's a bug feature...

My centre is set to small, fetch will always have it as large.

As said above, set up from scratch and send the config to the 568, save the config on your PC as the master file, don't depend on the fetch to get it back.

Some people have tried slowing down the port on the PC as it's too fast for the Meridian kit.

ATB,

Steve.

Hi guys!

Thanks for the quick responces.

I've had 5 other centre speakers over time, all analogue & needed an amp to run them. My favourite speaker was the ProAc Hexa centre speaker (my last centre before going Meridian). I realy like it as it was the smallest of all centre speakers I've had. It gave the voices less bass & made them clearer to hear at lower volumes (as I have neighbours & watch TV & films late at night). Most other centres I've had, had good bass for music but didn't suit me for TV & films. The DSP5000c is probaby the biggest centre I've owned & although I'm more use to it now, I'd still like to hear it set to small & see if I like it any better.

Thanks Steve! I didn't know that about the fetch bug thing. That'll be the problem!

Because of my preferences above I've also been considering changing from the DSP5000c to a DSP33c as it's smaller & may suit me better for TV & films but would like to compare the two together before I would decide.

Each time I change any settings I always create a new save for it. Is that what you mean by a config file? Sorry I'm not that good on computers, kinda learning as I go.

My full system set-up
DSP5000 24/96 Firmware 5.10
DSP5000c 24/96 Firmware 5.040 (can't confirm 24bit as there is no Serial No in the white box. I can upload a photo of the rear if anyone wishes)
Cheap Arcam power amp for the rears.
Bowers & Wilkins rears set as small which I'm fine with for now. Eventually I'd like to change them to DSP's when i've got some money saved up.

Hope I've answered everyones questions.

Thanks again,
Marc

Hi Marc,

I'm glad to hear that things are progressing!

Two things, does your DSP5000c have a 'smiley face' speaker cloth? If it does, it is 24 bit.

Secondly, you can change the settings within the speakers to account for them being close to corners and walls. I believe that this will also limit their bass output which should keep your neighbours happy smile to change these settings, it is probably easiest to go through the manual, which is in "Duncan's Meridian Info" at the top of the forum. I'm new to all of this myself too! You can also tell the speakers that they are part of a surround sound system too by changing their type.

I have had a few issues with uploading info into my 568.2 as well. I can confirm that the retrieve info doesn't work. Also, I found it more reliable if everything else Meridian based was turned off at the socket when uploading. One other way to check that things have uploaded is to change the owner info. This is flashed up after the 568.2 reboots. If the owner info has changed to whatever you just set it to, there is a good chance that everything else you altered changed too smile

This is my personal account. My dealer account (Clever & Simple - Peter) is now up and running smile

Thank Peter!

Great info, I'll definitely try that owners info bit, great little tip thanks! I make sure that everything is switched off apart from the 568.2 when I'm using the Legacy Program, always better to be safe than sorry.

The DSP5000C I think I've now found out is the MKI version as it's the rectangular style display & not the smiley face grin Looking at the rear I can't see anywhere where it says about the bit rate. As I mentioned in another post for some reason it doesn't have the serial number. Which I didn't realise till recently. I should have checked it when I bought it, doh!

Thanks,
Marc

If the DSP5Kc is showing FW of 5.040 it's 24/96 capable. The older 18bit 5Ks had FW of 4 or less and aren't flash-upgradable.

Meridian recommend setting the 5KC as small. From experience in my system changing from large to small for the centre made a significant improvement, large sounded very "muddy" in comparison.

I've had the config' file turn up as large centre when I was sure I'd set it as small, Steve's explanation makes sense, another "feature" to remember!

Regards

Richard
