Good afternoon all.
I wondered if the current version DSP7200 are the same as originally launched, or have there been any design iterations since launch ?
My DSP7200 bought recently to replace my 5500's have serial numbers 100050A and 50B.
regards Shaun Slasor

Hi,
Didn't they start out at 100 Watt amp per driver and they are now 150 Watts.
Same happened with the 8000
What serial number did the 150 Watt version of 7200 start.

I believe the only change was to the data sheet, the speaker itself has not changed.

Part of the problem is that Meridian do not clearly state that their power figures are into 8ohms RMS as we might expect. This has led to some "ambiguities".

Perhaps the 2003 Reply below Direct from Des Ford might help to clarify some of the "Power Spec" issues in relation to the DSP7200's and other Meridian DSP's My question to Des related to the Specs on the DSP8000's at the time......as well as to inconsistent numbers on Spec Sheets etc. Hello Ronnie, There has always been confusion over the power ratings of the amplifiers in our active and DSP speakers. This stems from the following. Power figures quoted for domestic power amps are usually quoted into 8 Ohms. If the amps in the D8Ks were extracted from the speaker and packaged as regular amps, they could provide 5 x 100W into 8 Ohms simultaneously and continuously. However, the figures given in the user-handbook reflect the actual power that the amps can deliver as part of the DSP8000 design. The 8Ks use tweeter and a mid-range drive units with impedances of around 6 Ohms. Each pair of bass drive units represents a 4 Ohm load. These lower-impedance loads mean that the power "increases" to 150W for the bass and we end up with two sets of apparently contradictory figures! At the risk of introducing a little more confusion, the designer tells me that the bass amps can actually deal with peaks in excess of 200W. I hope that this information is helpful. All the best, Des. Desmond Ford Technical Sales Meridian Audio Ltd. Huntingdon, England www.meridian.co.uk

The 2003 reply regarding inconsistencies, are illustrated by the differences in the first 2 spec sheets for DSP8000s on Duncan's site, which show 5x100 watts power amp specs, and the 3x150 watts for the bass amps, cited in the John Atkinson Stereophile review from the same year (2001).

Thanks for your answer, Ronnie, which makes everything clear. It just goes to show how misleading specs can be if taken out of context. I can now understand the problem Meridian have with their data sheets and that they were not trying to mislead. It would just have been helpful if they had provided clarification in a footnote along the lines of Des's reply to you.
