I have followed these threads for a while abot FW upgrade.
Lay off the source codes and let M deal with it is my statement!!
I've owned M gear since the early 90's and they have ALWAYS been slow.
It really helps with "everyone" finding the solution - ending up with M closing for open updates - now our world is easy... ;-)

M is not Linux and it never will be - I hope...
That is if we accept a world outside this restaurant of ours...

Push for development!!!! (UI, Trifield W, Plops etc)
Dont start attacking the source codes [censored] - that will only slow things down.
M is paranoid, they always have been and by God I hope they stay that way.

Enjoy geeking, but put dont start plucking feathers...
Please kick my ass...

BTW - anyone know how to get a factory visit when in the UK?

Yes, Burumsan's post is confusing.

I think fiddling with the firmware is the digital equivalent of tweaking your analogue gear by fitting, say, a different PSU. I didn't hear any outraged messages from the factory about stopping supply of physical spare parts when various hardware tweaks were publicised on here.

However, it is perfectly reasonable for Meridian to say their warranty is invalidated by changing firmware just like it would be by a hardware change. It is, of course, a little more difficult to detect without special measures being taken.

"Push for development" IMO misunderstands the situation. Actual development implies adding new or better features and could be a chargeable option. The things which you list are just making advertised features work properly (bug fixes, if you like) and should be made available promptly and FOC. This is just like your example of NVida providing updates. Most of these are to iron out problems.

As for Meridian being paranoid, I don't think thay are. They were just taken by surprise by the apodising stuff for processors as they had never been faced with this before. They reacted in a knee jerk and wrong fashion. Apodising is an UPGRADE and they could have put their own out as a chargeable option.

Indeed they could have done that, but instead they promised again and again to provide it as a free update and simply never delivered.

There is always the option to fall back to a "non-M" CD player, with a pre-amp and analogue active speakers for good old stereo. Does not need any software up-dates, pratically "always" up to date grin

My point is not Apodising which I totally agree should be FOC since it has been promised.

At the same time FW updates are for M also bugfixes - read the speccs on earlier FW updates.
An example is the Trifield width issue which still is not solved.
This is not acceptable and M should solve these issues - and of course they should be FOC.
They are faults and should be amended-MUCH faster then today.

My understanding for the reason to why FW upgrades were pulled was that they have been tweaked by "trigger happy" users. I agree that M pull the Warranty.
The sad result is that normal users do not get an overview and clear way to correct faults in the FW.
Example plopping sounds in div setups - my own included.

Again normally HW mods also ends up with defaulting your Warranty - albeit this is not a cut and dry sitiuation...
SW/FW mods to gear is OK in my book, but I have full understanding the M does not facilitate for support that - This is not open source and they are tweeked by M - and there is a BIG problem if you can not restore to defaults.
I would love to see it made open source and with restores, but until the leave it to M

Appologies for my wording paranoid - BUT I still believe M is and should be carefull and try to have as stable a product line as possible.

I was wondering if anyone could kindly tell me the lastest firmware version of the 7200HC and if it is the same file as the 7200's.
Secondly when I recently opened the M config program it asked to check the M site for updates and it seemed to access it and updated the build to 3440. I thought M took down all the software or am I mistaken and an update really did happen ( I'm not sure if the build was different before as I didn't pay close enough attention).

3440 is the build I updated to last year. Not sure exactly when it was released. Is it just the firmware versions that were taken down ?
