The May 2011 issue.

It's hardly my place to scoop or cut 'n' paste the review; everyone interested should nip on out and buy a copy of the magazine.

But he... didn't appear to despise it.

Thanks for the Zinio tip. The review is brief and his last sentence says it all.

May issue!? This week the April issue hit my mailbox, guess I have to wait another month. It takes some time to ship a magazine over the Atlantic.....

There were two interesting items in this article.

The first was:
Stereophile readers can find out about upgrading 861 reference v1-4 by emailing stereophile@Meridian.co.uk

I thought the upgrade program had ended

The second was:
Some older modular boards still compatible

I know that there has been some reference on the forum to older boards working but is this now official?

Regarding modular boards, it was explained to a couple of us that part of the backplane change was to do with where a board got it's bus clock from. With v6, apparently the clock is a single centralised source but prior to that multiple clocks seemed to be split across multiple cards and shared with 'known good' card pairings. The result is a more stable backplane requiring less complicated termination or even none in most cases. Presumably this improved stability led to better control leading to better audio quality.

I can guess that depending on whether an old card had it's own bus clock and combined with its stability 'behaviour', then it may or may not work as apart from pre v6 cards containing their own 'bus' clock or not, it sounded to me that there is nothing physically different between v6 and prior cards.

Not for Stereophile readers. grin

When I was preparing the review, I confirmed that the upgrade program had expired but I expressed my dissatisfaction that it had prior to our initial report to our readers. Sorta, too late, guys! So, Meridian came up with the idea that they might be able to do something in association with the appearance of the review and we included that note about it.

Frankly, I do not know the deal or the contingencies but Meridian has promised us that there will be something. You should ask, I guess.

And then let us all know.
