purcased 596 about 1 year ago. outstanding machine and has read CD DVD ( all regions formats brilliantly ) MP3 CD R's etc.
Recently it is randomly rejecting DVD's some of which were read previously, and play perfectly well on a PC or another player.
After a painfully long' loading ' it dispalys ' no disc '
Anybody experience this problem. Any suggestions on the cause- misalignment of the disc caridge, worn out part or do I just need to rebrain the whole thing.
Love this player but this is anoying!

Kevin,
Mine has just started doing a similar thing in the last 2-3 weeks. Basically, discs are searched for a while before the 596 finally returns "no disc". These are with discs that have previously played with no problem.

I find that a power off at the back resolves the problem, albeit that is not satisfactory.

The only thing I will try before contacting M is to re-do all the connections at the back (596/568/562v) as something may have become loose when I installed some powercords from Russ Andrews. How this would affect things, I am not certain, but, as it's the only thing that I have done in the last few months, I check it first.

I haven't yet taken 1.3 either

Regards

Nick

FWIW: last night had a no-disc offender. Tried maybe 20-30 times to turn-off (stand-by and rear panel switch), press clear, open/close etc etc. No joy, so gave up and played a different disc. After that disc had finished, my frustration levels were back to OK, so I tried the previous disc.....it played first time. Until 3-4 weeks ago, this disc had been playing, as had all the others that have returned "no-disc", without any issue.

Can someone please explain why this issue would be so unpredictable ? If it were just the red-book debate vs BIOS etc, I'd expect it to play or not 100% of the time...not when it pleases itself !

Any ideas ?

Nick

It could be that the offending disc has become dirty. Try cleaning the disc.

It is the first thing I always check. One of yesterday's CD's was brand new out of the box. 1st two attempts = no disc. Played twice since...no issue at all.

I don't understand what could be the cause.....

I've had a similar problem with an older Meridian 200 CD transport. Sent it to Atlanta and had the laser realigned. Has cured the problem on most discs, altho occasionally, it will recur. I've learned to use the Stop button to close the disc drawer, rather than the drawer open/close button.

Thanks Greg.

I'm going to phone M tomorrow. The 596 completely refused to play CD's this afternoon. re-set all cables, de-powered, re-typed......everything I could think of.
Tried 10 CD's...nothing.

Wondered if DVD's were also impacted...no issue, several played no problem. Put a CD in after a few DVD'S AND....NO PROBLEM.

Therefore, can only conclude that it is hardware related, hence the forthcoming call to M.

Kevin, sorry to hijack your thread...but, are you still having problems with "no disc"?

Send it back to Meridian, they will (did in my case) replace the offending drive unit.

The only pain is being without your 596)-:

Martin.
