Hello all.

I'm new here and about to become a Meridian convert.

My first requirement is a 557 power amp.

If anyone has one, or knows of one, for sale I'd be obliged for a heads up.

Thanks.

Regards, Paul.

Welcome. Enjoy the ride! I have replied to your PM.

What equipment makes up the rest of your system, into which you plan to slot the 557?

Duncan

Hi. I'm going to replace my Naim gear with an Audiolab CDQ and at the moment I'm using my SBL's. I am interested in your M33's though.

Hi Porl,

Welcome to the forum.

As you're potential looking at an amp and speaker upgrade; have you considered going down the Meridian DSP route, say with a pair of DSP5000 (24/96)? IMHO 5000s are the best value on the planet these days, if funds allow the next move up would be a pair of DSP5200s.

If you've never had the opportunity to listen to a pair of DSPs, I really recommend that you do before committing funds. That said if you prefer the more traditional analogue path the 557 is a super AMP.

Regards,
Carl

Hi Carl,

I still quite like the idea of the analogue approach; so I'm still looking for a 557 or a pair of M60's or perhaps M33's, whichever I can find first.

Thanks for your advice. Most appreciated.

I'm looking at the eBay one. Odd bidding there though.

No 557 owners here looking for an eager buyer then yet?

Hmmmm..... I replaced my NAP250 with a 557 a few years ago. It was the last bit of the Naim system to go.

Hi Stevo.

Did you consider it a good move, changing the 250 for the 557?

Cheers, Paul.

Hi Paul,

Yes, definitely, but then it was the last thing to go from what had been an all-Naim system. I'd kept it on for a while, but I was driving Linn Kabers at the time and they seem to be at their best with as much power as you can throw at them, short of going active. As a hopelessly simple comparison, following the nomenclature of Naim amps, IIRC the 557 would be the equivalent of a NAP600.

And as the rest of my system had tended towards Meridian by that point, including moving to a digital preamp, it was the way to go. DAC at the time was a Benchmark DAC1 so I could also try the balanced outs into the 557, which seemed to make a meaningful difference.

I have DSPs now though.
