Jan 1 already here in Australia with a rather nice 27C (80F) temperature outside. Consolations to those in the Northern hemi suffering extreme cold.
And I am really revelling in the music collection, now so handily stored on hard drive in the Meridian Sooloos system. It is so simple to find any piece but what I'm doing at the moment is to use the "swim" function (meaning random access) to let it find tracks within a specified field. This is "discovering" lots of music I'm unfamiliar with and has rarely , or maybe never, been previously played.
And what is mind blowing is just how much lovely music is on record. I'm like a kid in a sweet shop!
But it is not being listened to via amps and speakers but via the Sennheiser HD800 headphones fed by a balanced digital feed out of the Meridian MS600 to the modded (thanks again Steve Nugent) Benchmark DAC1. And the quality of reproduction is equal to the best ever heard on this system and better than a lot of other players. The only source that levels with it is the modded Esoteric UX-1 but that is only being used for DVDs at the moment. I might go back to listen to MC SACD & DVD-A using it but am not missing MC yet. Those Sennheiser HD800s reproduce amazing ambience.
I've had the headphones for over 6 months now and am getting more accustomed to wearing them. I do get sick of them after a couple of hours but the audio quality makes listening using them addictive. Bottom line is that they are proving the test of time so have passed the euphoria often associated with new audio toys.
All the above explains why quite a few operatic Blu Rays are languishing on the shelf unplayed. I'm re-engaged with 2CH audio again more than I ever expected to be. And one of the most pleasing aspects of it all is how few CDs via Sooloos are of mediocre quality. All of which suggests that maybe Meridian really have made a break through with their "apodising" filters and it shows that redbook CD is capable a first rate audio with most problems sheeting back to players and DACs.
Happy New Year everyone and especially to Duncs and the Mods for all their hard work that makes this forum possible; and also to Meridian in the hope that it will have a prosperous year and thus continue to cater so well to our listening and viewing pleasure. And we must not forget those dealers who help us and whose commitment goes beyond a mere business relationship.
