Sorry it's a bit OT, but, I'd be interested to hear member's views on the subject of Blu-ray Audio discs. There are a few at the moment - and it looks like an interesting development.

As someone who lives at the end of a farm track in rural Wales, the chance of any broadband connection fast enough to allow me to download movies and/or hi-res audio is pretty slim. So I'm a disc man, and blu-ray through a cheap Sony player and an M system is rather good.

Two Tom Petty discs, 'Mojo' and 'Damn the Torpedoes' are available in the USA (not in the UK of course), as is the four hour 'Runnin Down A Dream' documentary (video as well). Does anyone know if these discs are region-locked? They are on the Reprise label (part of Warner Bros.) so in the normal movie world these would be region free.

Hopefully this is an area that could grow. More and more concert discs are becoming available, but it seems that in the pop world only Mr Petty has been brave enough to put out Blu-ray Audio discs.

Should there be more?

The Tom Petty titles are not locked. I got mine from amazon.com and they work just fine. I presume none of these titles has a real reason for being region locked, but it's much safer to check before buying, anyway.

I have Mojo and Neil Young's Le Noise as well as the 2L and Naxos audio BRDs. They are all well done and, especially in MCH, better than one expects from CD. OTOH, as we know, a lot has to do with the care and effort taken in their production and that counts as much as the format.

The sound is inherently no better than BRDs with video where, if you wish, you can turn off the display for better enjoyment. There are many of these.

BTW, I get no pleasure from the highlighted discs but, again, that has nothing to do with the format.

Bruce Springsteen has a Blu-Ray out at the moment, wel reviewd but I havnt seen it yet. I urge you to find the Blu-ray of "Live in Dublin, Bruce with the Seeger sessions band".
I have the DVD its amazing, I have seen the Blu-ray pre owned in a "Game" shop for �9.99. I am tempted, but already own it and as my system is, I would have little advantage.
Also Jeff Beck at Ronnie Scotts.

I also have the Beck disc and it's amazing.
I bought SWMBO The Circus (Take That) and the studio recordings are very good too.

I purchase Tom Petty's "Mojo" on Bluray, CD, And Vinyl. I spent so time A-B-C ing. As was said earlier a lot has to do with the quality of the recording but I had a slight preference for the Bluray. Also The Bluray has the choice of two channel or 5.1. Recording quality is nice. I also have "Damn the Torpedoes" on Bluray and it is ok but IMHO not nearly as well recorded as "Mojo". Personally, I would like to see more studio recording on Bluray high res. Bluray seems to be coming popular for concerts and some are very nice such as "John Mayer's" at the Nokia.

Yes, the Jeff Beck is good. And so is "AC/DC Live at Donington", which is markedly better than the standard DVD issue.

And then there are a host of wonderful operas, discussed in another thread.

I might be wrong, but I think we are inadvertently expanding the original scope of the thread - my understanding is that the original poster reffered to Blu-Ray Audio (-only) discs (BD Audio).

Not that I find something wrong with discussing all music BD's

OK I'll put it right back on track but I can't go to far because the Bluray content is limited.


Should there be more? I wish. As I said earlier I have "Mojo" and really enjoy the recording quality with a preference to the 5.1 MCH. I have the Bluray "Damn the Torpedoes" and was not impressed but I have only listened to it twice and not listening under critical conditions so I'll give it another try. I have Niel Young's "Le Noise" Bluray with black and white video of the in studio recording of 8 songs on order. The release date for this is Dec 14, 2010. I'm trying to support the industry but not sure if there will be a critical mass to carry it forward. There are a number of concert video Bluray's with superb sound quality but I find myself diving for the remote to skip over many non musical sections. I have a large DVD-A collection but I am waiting for Bluray to rev up. Where is the content?

The content will be coming. Or not. technically we have the equivalent of DVD-A, some six years later. We'll just have to wait and see I think but maybe having little expectations will help.
