I do not run it full range. The ADA is crossed over at 80hz. You stated that all 8 channels of the SSP where connected to the QSC, so which device (SSP or QSC) does output above 80Hz to your speakers? As stated, the SSP is set at 80 hz. Ken

I think what George is saying is that to avoid throwing away the added value of the Meridian, you need to sample at a very high sample rate. Much of the value of the Meridian products is in their ability to massage a signal. Part of this is resolution enhancement.
By the time the signal has left the 861, it has been resolution enhanced to 192/24 carried as an analogue signal. To recreate this signal back in the digital domain, it would need to be sampled at twice this frequency, otherwise you will be throwing away some of what the Meridian processor has added.
Whether what Meridian adds is value or not is down to the individual, especially when the signal may have started life out as CD quality. But the message is, if you are buying into all the Meridian tricks that make their products different from others, then one should consider whether it is right to undo all those tricks by resampling at a lower rate than is necessary to recreate an exact digital representation of the original signal as fully processed the processor.
Whether or not the signal at this sample rate makes any audible difference is not what I see Georges post being all about. Its all about the ability to correctly recreate the theoretical digital signal output from the DAC that is only present in analogue form, assuming that the physical digital input to the DAC is processed further in the DAC with Meridian adding value in the final DAC process of the 861. Sorry if this sounds confusing as we are talking about a theoretical digital signal from a device that only outputs analogue.
Apologies George for speaking on your behalf, but I think I understood what you were trying to say and thought that as a gardener, I may have a bigger spade than you!

Questions remaining to get the full picture: - From what device are you speakers connected? - What speakers are defined large or small in the SSP. - What speakers are defined large or small in the QSC.

Sorry to be pedantic, but this is a technical discussion and resolution enhancement means something very specific. Better just to say that the signal has been enhanced (period) to 192/24.

George - you have a very fundamental misunderstanding of Nyquist and the sample rate. 48kHz indicates the analog signal is sampled 48,000 times per second (at Soundstream, we used 50kHz). Nyquist then says at 48,0000 times per second, 24kHz would be the highest frequency you can accurately resolve (prior to folding and other stuff ... note, I am keeping this in very simple terms). In actual practice, the implementation of the filters and the conversion back to analog also enter into sound quality. I really don't know who you are but I think it's you that has a complete lack of understanding. Sampling at 48Khz you have completely wiped out any nuances that Meridian adds or to be able capture anything like a 96Khz recording. You would be better off switching the Meridian to non 24/96Khz DSP Speakers and working with Digital 48Khz than to be SAMPLING the analog at 48Khz. It just completely blows my mind what you're doing with Meridian's customers. It seems interesting that the couple folks that have bailed on Meridian has your hand involved. That says a LOT. What you're trying to say (and Frank I think) is if you record at say 44Khz. Play it back on a 44Khz DAC and then resample at 44Khz you'd still have the "information" contained in the first 44Khz recording. YOU WON'T. You'd have to jump to 96Khz (extremely inefficient but it's the only way to guarantee no information loss). The Meridian massages the 44Khz up to 88Khz. And to capture ALL that "information" Meridian added (mainly apodizing) you'd have to resample it at 176Khz. Meridian upsamples again at their DACs and does not really add any new information (as far as I know). So you I don't think you really have to sample at twice that rate. But resampling at 48khz is absolutely absurd.

I really don't know who you are but I think it's you that has a complete lack of understanding. I've dealt with both Dennis and members of his team on multiple occasions. He's extremely competent. He's also been quite supportive of Meridian 861v6 sonics, at least in relatively recent conversations with me.

George,
What comes out of the analog outputs of an 861 after Meridian has applied resolution enhancement, upsampling, and all of its "secret sauce" is an analog signal which has a frequency response of x Hz to y kHz.
When performing analog to digital conversion, you will need to sample that analog signal at 2*y kHz to capture everything that is there to capture. Unless you think that there is high frequency information up to 192kHz in that analog signal, you will not need to resample at 384kHz. Likewise, unless you think that there is high frequency information up to 96 kHz in that analog signal, you will not need to resample at 192kHz. Moreover, unless you think that there is high frequency information up to 48kHz in that analog signal, you will not have to resample at 96kHz. Continuing, unless you think that there is high frequency information up to 44.1kHz in that analog signal, you will not have to resample at 88.2kHz.
Bob has consistently maintained that 96/24 is overkill to capture everything that is audible. Surely an analog to digital converter sampling at 48kHz is more than adequate to capture the analog signal representing the bass output from a crossover operating at 80Hz without compromising any of the Meridian magic performed in making such analog signal.

I wasn't being condescending, merely pointing out the use of an incorrect term which I felt didn't help this very technical discussion.

Mentioned often on this forum, and there seem to be many believers and people that want to believe, but I am quite sure there is no such thing. Back on-topic, still looking forward to get insight in Kens system config.

It seems interesting that the couple folks that have bailed on Meridian has your hand involved. Really? I know of exactly one. I really don't know who you are but I think it's you that has a complete lack of understanding. Possibly true. There's been a lot of water under the bridge since I worked on the project that developed direct to digital recording and the first digital editing system. At my age, I can easily forget what happened since before this morning.
Imagine what you could do if you could do all you imagine.

I have been an observer of this topic for many years. In that time I have gained a lot of respect for both you, George, and Dennis. Heres his website (assuming I have identified Drksine correctly). http://www.erskine-group.com/about.phpI dont know about the rest of the stuff youre talking about here. I just plugged in my gear and it sounds good to me.
