Not really, apart from the loading problem (not recognizing DVD) when it played CD it was mostly OK. On the dvds it did play the picture would occasionally pause/stop just for a moment then continue (a bit like the layer change). I don't remember any strange noises at these points although I guess the audio must have stopped as well.

Simon,

Good timing on your question, glad I checked back. I experienced a new symptom that comes close to your artifacts inquiry.

New symptom reveled itself last night. Last night (800's mind of it's own prefered play time) after getting her to run about 5 songs into a CD it almost sounded like it was playing an LP at the wrong speed and static came thru the unit as the unit struggled to read and transfer the material off the CD. It was like it was dropping packets and kept pushing on but took 10-20- 30 seconds to finish a lyric, sentence or verse. I finally gave up and shut her down. This morning again she was not in the "mood" to play anything. We'll see how her mood is this eve :{. This getting old has to get boxed up and back to Atlanta!! An aside, a trend that seems to be forming is the 800 often WILL NOT play in the day time but much prefers the evening or night time, not so convenient for me however!

Best,

J

Ah, that's because you can't just 'jump to it' - got to romance the old girl a bit ....

Silliness aside, I've been hearing a bit of faint 'digital hash' occassionally thru my speakers and cannot decide whether it is in the recording or an artifact of a failing 800 drive.

smile I was getting something like that as well long (6months ago)before the 800 started acting up but maybe it's related and that was the early indication the 800 was in need of a attention still does it from time to time when I'm not running 2 ch direct with MRC off. So maybe they're not related as the 800 is getting more hosed by the day/week. I liken it to a veil of distorted treble, like a treble lisp, hazy overhang. whatever label u want to give it it is annoying and VERY distracting ! The answer from Mother was to turn off MRC hook the 8000's directly up to the 800 and run DSP direct from the 861. Boy did that ever take care of things! When run like that I get no lisp, or harshness. I really only catch it with music cause that's the only media I use the 800 for smile

Best,

J

Hi J

Not sure I understand what advice you were given here. If it's a 800 issue then how does by-passing the 861 solve it ? Surely it would suggest an 861 issue ?

Hook 800 direct to 8000 and run DSP from 861 ? Confusing???

cheers

Nick

Apparently, there is a new repair policy that includes a fixed price for 800! Now, for the bargain price of $950 (regardless of what is wrong?) you too can get a new drive for your player mad What a rip!

Yes Simon, you are on the ball here txs for quick update.

I just heard about (about an hour before reading Simon's post) the fixed price repair pricing, it went out to dealer today. I didn't hear about the flat fee of $950 fixes anything and everything.
Mother is going to have some real problems with customers having to pay these "fixed prices" I'm guessing. Oh , so you on your 3rd 8xx power supply, that will be $950 thank you!!
It is not fair to ask your customers to pay for "known" shortfall in product design or vendor/product selection.

This smells a bit like Airline etal Corp now nickel and dime-ing you on every possible angle to squeeze their customers for a BUCK!

Cheers (not)
Jay

My G98DH experience similar problem. The strange thing is that it plays every CD that is older recording. But for the newer recordings, it takes a long time to spin and finally displays no disc. I can read any DVD fine.
The $950 fixed fee does make me disappointed at M. I think the service at M is getting a lot worse. I had similar problem with my 500 transport long time ago, but M took care it with just software update with no charge.
M players are not reliable. Shame....

Find out which offer your dealer give you.
If its to expensive,
buy one drive on eBay(between 40to70U$) and replace it yourself.

Or better, ask the dealer to deliver one drive for you direct from M.
You have a right to get spare parts- "speak" with your dealer.

A person who is familiar with electronic or mechanics can do that.,
its not to hard.
I also dit replace twice my drive, but dit get it from M for free.
I can give you a little help here.

The first thing to check when you want to use a "eBay" drive,
is to know how to install the "firmware" on the drive.
There was some posts here about that,
I personally have no knowledge /experiences with that-but some HH have done it.

The toughened glass heated rear window imploded on my 5 year old Aston Martin a few weeks ago. This is a known fault and has been discussed widely on the equivalent forum to this for Astons.

The window was replaced FOC by the dealer with support from the factory.

Now, in the past, I have compared Meridian with Aston (quirky, British etc.) but now I'm not so sure.

Yes, I have to check - it may be that my 800 is still under warranty (I think it is slightly less than 3 years old). Regardless, the reliability of these units is troubling. This drive problem will the the third time my 800 pays a visit to Atlanta - and I've yet to experience the joy of a power supply failure.

If my repair frequency keeps up, the 'maintenance' stream will be $1K per year. Unacceptable in a unit that cost $20K.
