I have the 10.5.8 build which will boot off an external drive somewhere, it is set up to run properly (slim install) on the AppleTV, well enough for itunes etc. anyway.
No Darling, I've had it months!

Just get a disc and put it in a player, it seems so simple to me lol
No 18 in the Hall of fame I have simple tastes; I am content to settle for the best: GIK monster bass panels, rear wall. QNAP TVS 471i3. Roon into DSP5200SE via 210/ 218 zone... Explorer 2. Bluesound Pulse 2, Mini & Flex. 596v1, 518, Foxsat HD, Sony BDP, Pioneer 5090, 2 Chromecast's for LRB videos. MS200 to F80 for a Roon zone

The Apple TV uses a Pentium M processor, which is ancient in the modern world. I also seem to remember that it only carries a minimum amount RAM No chance this has the necessary horsepower to run OSX and definitely not the OSX Server Edition my understand is that the old AppleTV *does* run OSX. I think it's 10.4 and it's heavily pared down, but if you hack it and ssh in, it's OSX you see. no sense in making a brand new OS if you can help it. but remember that iOS is basically a pared down OSX too. dave

My post was written in the context of replying to a previous post about using Plex MC, which requires OSX 10.5 or 10.6. The use of OSX Server Edition was also mentioned
Just looked it up and the old Apple TV has 256Mb of Ram. Apple say the MINIMUM Ram for 10.5 is 512Mb.
Sure, it looks like you can get OSX 10.5.8 to "work", but with a Pentium M Processor and 256Mb of Ram, I wonder how it feels to use in the real everyday world.......
I also doubt that that you could get Plex MC to run alongside OSX and iTunes in that amount of Ram. ITunes is a Ram hog at the best of times
To each, their own...........

Yeah, Right
Tell that to the kids when they wait 60 seconds for each mouse command to be executed
Trying to compare DSP Chips running very specific & streamlined code to a modern computer OS is inane
When someone here actually implements this Apple TV / OSX / Plex / iTunes solution, post a Youtube video so we can see what it's like.........

talking about plex, anyone else seen this announcement? http://elan.plexapp.com/2010/09/02/plex-and-the-future-of-television/basically it says that plex is now a company selling the plex technology to (currently) LG electronics to incorporate into TV's and Bluray players. ie you'd have the media manager running on a computer elsewhere, but the plex front end integrated into a TV or BR player. sounds very interesting... actually, to me, much more interesting that the new appletv... dave

Tell that to the kids when they wait 60 seconds for each mouse command to be executed My ZX81 was quicker than that.

Just wondering if anyone has managed to get unmolested 16/44.1 out of the ATV2 ? During my brief time with it, I only ever saw 48k (streaming apple lossless CDs).
