Hey folks,

This is one that I was confused about. So, I've seen several times mention of the Sooloos system as closed in that while it is on the network and you can stream from it to Mac/PC clients, you can't actually view the files. However, I've seen a couple of mentions of users saying they can access the system on their network. One user even said that they could access the lower bitrate versions of content that the system automatically creates - not copies of those exported to a NAS, but directly on the Sooloos Store. I've tried on my Macs and a Windows 7 PC and don't see the Sooloos system on my network at all even though I have access to it from the web interface as well as ControlPC/Mac and the iPhone/iPad client. Is there a setting somewhere that I may be missing?

Thanks!

Jeff

Hi Jeff,
In early firmware versions the Sooloos created a virtual hard drive on your networked PCs which gave you access to these files withour the need to export them.
Firmware version 2.1 changed this process, adding the file export functions, and removing this virtual drive.
You can't see the files directly from a PC, you have to export them first.

That's what I thought too. I think this particular user is almost certainly running the current (2.286), but I'm checking with him on that. He said he didn't do anything special or change any setting to gain the ability, it's just there. He's had the system for several years, so maybe it's some weird holdover from the pre-2.1 days?

Carl has previously mentioned the ability to see support files on the Control:10 in another thread. That combined with what I have been told by this other user got me thinking about all this. If it's not currently possible, no big deal. But, if it is and I just have to do something to set it up or have Meridian activate it for me (like how you have to have them setup Stores for you remotely - this was removed from user accessible settings to prevent accidental mass content deletion), I'd definitely be interested. File exports are fine, but it seems silly to duplicate those files if you don't have to.

Hi Jeff, the music files that I saw on a Sooloos (Ensemble V2.2xx) where in Sooloos format (the same format as a Sooloos backup, the folder and file names are just Hex numbers) you can't use these files other than on a Sooloos system. Also I believe all the Meta-data is stripped from them and held in the Sooloos database and .

Regards,
Carl

Thanks Carl and that really is interesting. It's odd how different the experiences are from user to user. If I get any more feedback from the other user who is streaming the lower res files from his TwinStore, I'll post back here.

I'm pretty sure that you can browse the full content of the Sooloos drive by entering \\192.168.1.20 (or whatever the IP address of your device is) into Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer).

I would double check this now, except my system is mothballed for a room refurbishment... It certainly used to work on my Ensemble; no idea if TwinStore would be the same.

Just be careful when you're browsing the file system to not accidentally move or delete anything.

Ian
