AppleTV or better yet the new mini hdmi out will be superior to anything else out there in simple terms and flexibility etc. And question 3 of this original thread is satisfied, imnsho.

I'm a big fan of Apple TV too, I think it's a very underrated device. It will be interesting to see what the next iteration is -- Apple has said that their new $1B server farm will be online in January, so maybe we'll see it then.

Haven't heard claims of FLAC being superior to ALC -- can't fathom a technical reason for this.

Some people claim WAV sounds "better" than FLAC but I've never heard an argument that ALAC sounds better than FLAC :-)

HI Bill
I really don't think anyone around here is claiming that Apple Lossless sounds worse than FLAC.or vice versa

With good, careful rips, I think most agree that ALAC = FLAC = Redbook CD. All 16/44

Again, I think that most agree that 24/96 sounds better than 16/44 when proper care is taken with the masters etc.

Again, this would apply whether the Data is Losslessly Compressed or not, thru FLAC or ALAC

So, what people are saying is NOT that FLAC is better than ALAC, but that 24/96 High Res sounds better than 16/44

Amarra and Pur Music Players allow for the seamless playback of BOTH 16// and 24/96 Music Tracks, without needing to close and reopen iTunes. They also do their own things with Apple's Core Audio which they say allows for playback improvement. Pure Music's Hog Mode and Memory Playback from RAM only are particularly worthy of note IMHO

I hear what you say. I've never used iPeng - perhaps that's the way forward. But I recently created a big playlist (7 hours plus)taking single tracks from about 140 albums for a party, using SB server on a PC, and it was not the slickest experience ever. Biggest problem is the delay in refreshing the web interface screen every time you click something.

Hi Ian
in short, this is possible. Care needs to be taken however to go about setting it up in the right sequence

Most people don't move their iTunes Library files to the NAS and then place them at the Root of the ITunes Folder. This is critical

Then the iTunes on the Mac / PC needs to be pointed at the iTunes Folder, as well as at the Library Files using the "Choose Library" option

Fire Up the Remote App on an iTouch or iPad and enter the Pass Code

Tick the "Stay Connected" option on the Remote app

You can allow the Mac to go to sleep

The Remote App will continue to find the chosen Library as long as the NAS remains powered on and you don't lose complete power or Sync your iTouch

Besides, With the newer Mac Mini's only taking up 10W when Idling, turning off the Computer is not as "important" as it used to be

Outside of hi-rez stuff, I do all my playlists in iTunes which I find simpler than SB server. Could be that I'm simply more familiar iTunes, but maybe not from what you say.

As far as controlling the SBs, iPeng has no delay in my system -- works perfectly and the latest update added some features.

YOU actually claimed FLAC was better, but then again it was YOU that claimed a spinner would always be superior to streaming. Anyhow, moving along........

I'd like someone who claims that 24/96 of a REDBOOK CD RIP sounds better than 16/44 as served up via macmini or any other methed into SAME setup do a detailed A/B comparison. That'd be fun.

LOL!!! No idea what you're talking about as I've never said such a thing

What makes it even funnier is that I've said for years that I've been using Apple Lossless thru Sonos Players................

Again an INCORRECT statement

What I have said in the past is that my Meridian 800 player sounded better than the same material thru an SB3, Sonos or direct from a Media Server. I would still maintain that opinion about the 800, 808.2 and 808.3. I believe this has a lot to do with their ability to RE and Upsample at the EARLIEST possible opportunity and then transfer that data using MHR Encryption at Higher Rates, across the SPDIF Output and Input Interfaces All of which are increasingly acknowleged to cut down on the various forms of correlated and decorrelated Jitter

That's a long way different from the alleged "Spinners are always better"..............and it also coincides with the views of Meridian and lots of 80x Users on here

Bill, if you're going to start quoting people, you had better get your facts straight

Its doesn't work. That exactly how mine is setup. The moment I kill iTunes on the MC, Airport Express stops playing and Apple Remote loses connection to the library, even if stay connected is ticked. Airport Express needs iTunes running on a PC/Mac (AppleTV?) to provide it with music and Apple Remote needs iTunes to provide it access to a music library. The moment iTunes goes, AE becomes non functional as an AirTunes client.

Even if what you say does work, its not using the 'iTunes server' functionality built into many NAS boxes. To be honest, the marketing of these as iTunes servers is a very tentative link. Technically it is a server, but not in the way that people expect them to be. Thankfully when I purchased, I had done my homework and knew that a NAS based iTunes server would only present itself as a share to iTunes, but many people have bought iTune Server NAS boxes thinking that it would replace iTunes on their PC/Mac and only after purchase found that they still needed iTunes running on PC/Mac.

More than happy to be given full instructions on how to do this as it would be a nice benefit to be able to play my AE without having my PC/iTunes on.

Works for me when I've tried it. As recently again as last night

Moving the two iTunes Library files to the folder root and selecting Stay Connected, combined with the initial authorisation occurring with the Mac on.

What are the file extensions on your two library files???

Scratching head

That was exactly the point George. In the vein of your MP3 vs FLAC test wink But of course some in here claimed that the FLAC was better, the very same one's that defend their 80x spinners laugh
