I was wounder if you all knew that the ff/fr and repeat in dvda playback was nonfunctional (as per my previuos post'598 and DVDA probs') and if so how did you find out i.e from use or was there some info on the prob included in your manuel?
thank for the info Skooby

skooby,
It's not functional, but I generally don't use FF or FR on audio playback. I listen to entire tracks, not fast forwarding say 3:18 into a track.
Your tone is such that this is a flaw, and I submit to you that if the intent was not to have sound output during DVD-A queing (ie ff/fr) it has been executed to specification.
Whether you agree with that is another story altogether.
As Stacey pointed out, it's pretty complicated to handle FF/FR on MLP encoded material.
If you happen to have a DVD-A title that isn't encoded with MLP, try FF/FR on that, and see if it's a function of whether MLP is used. My guess is that this will work, and that Stacey's commentary in the other thread about buffering issues with MLP playback being the reason it is not done.
The fact that the 598 greatly exceeds sonically any other DVD-A player I've had in my system is the most important aspect of the player to me.

Yes I am a little mift why?
Firstly no info in manuel on the non working of fr/ff with regard DVDA infact the manuel say this is possable no mention of MLP making any dif.
Secondlt the repeat function is also non fuctional again no info. Manuel sat is possable.
My main gripe is that no mention of these fact can with my player. I would of though that if i was told of this plus any reason wny this is so I would of been happy.
But to pay many k and then to think I have a defective player and have to find out my self as the dearler was non the wiser, that the player was ok. Does not install me with confidence in going up to an 800 if and when I could afford one.
At the price of an combernation 598 and 568.2mm (I'm not that intrested ind DVDV play back) many otherr high-end player are avaliable.
As you say the sonic performance is very good no camplants there, but expected better from Meridian as regards info and costomer severice.

Skooby,
I was playing with the 598 tonight, and decided to hit FF/FR just to verify my results.
With a single push of FF or FR I got sound output about once a second. Above that rate of advancement, there was no output.
The question is really do you value sound quality over convenience or vice versa. I know where my vote is.

Hi John,
Yes bought my 598 for sound performance, but function that are perported to be avaliable and are not seem to me to be a mistake, these function are nothing special just ff/fr and dont forget repeat.
BTW these function are only non working on DVDA not CD, so its not so bad but a new format which meridain is highly involved in should try harder to get people intrested in it.
Also when using the ff/fr the sound mutes/unmutes BUT the pees of playback is not increased. Please try it by whating the time code or singing along to verify.
Again repeat is also not working which would be handy to burn in cable etc. while having a DVDA playing.
My realy piont is that I would of liked to have been informed about the status of ff/fr and repeat I still would of bought but I wouldnt of thought my machine was broke and would not be complaining now!

Skooby, If you check out question 30 on the FAQ for 598 in the Library on Meridian's website it does actually say that Repeat does not operate on Dvd_a material though I would agree with you, and this has been discussed on other threads, it can often be a bit of a maze on their site trying to find the information you need. whoever runs the site doesn't seem to look at it from an end-user's point of view and certainly doesn't update it often enough.

I would imagine that it is possible that it is a liability to ship a product and tell people all the flaws in it.
Perhaps Jerry or Joel might know more about this.
I am not aware of a single product hardware or software that has shipped with a list of bugs in it, from any company.
What might be an iteresting thing to ask is how many people actually FF/FR through a song. I can't think of ever doing that with a CD. I use chapter next all the time to go past songs.

Repeat also depends on the authoring.
For example, Graham Nash's Songs for Survivors and Glen Philips' Abulum both autorepeat with no action on my part.
OTOH, my WB titles don't repeat.
We'll have to agree to disagree on sound on queueing. I think it is neither a bug or a critical feature.
Yes snippets of sound are released with FF/FR hit once, however playback is accelerated, although the portions output are pitch accurate with the original. Maybe 2:1 vs. real time.

Frank, yes it does. But DVD-V and DVD-A are different beasts under the hood.
I do use FF/FR on DVD-V all the time.

Skooby You mention above that the 598 manual specifically states that FF and FR and Repeat are possible with DVD-A`s. Having read thru the manual, I can reassure you that this is not the case.
First of all, on Page 26 of the Meridian 598 User Guide it says
“Repeat is not available for DVD-Audio discs.”
As John as pointed out above, many DVD-A`s appear to repeat automatically anyway. Function OSD on your remote will indicate on any attached display device the “Repeat Mode” of the DVD-A. (In addition, if you want to burn in a cable(s), then use a CD with PLII, if necessary to activate all speakers.)
In relation to Fast Forward and Fast Reverse, Page 25 of the 598 manual has the EXPLICIT heading
“To play DVD-Video discs or audio CDs faster than normal”
and then proceeds to give instructions on how to achieve this with CD`s and DVD-V`s. it does not say this is possible with DVD-A`s. I agree it would have been better if they had stated this explicitly, but it`s a sin of omission rather than commission!!
If you want to go to a certain part of a DVD-A track, then press Function and # 3 times on your MSR. This will stop the disc at the current track and change the display on your 598 and allow you to put in a timecode on a particular track (e.g. 5:17)
While this is not exactly the same as FF or FR, it offers similar functionality (I imagine that this is the case, as like everybody else, I use Track skipping to advance or reverse.)
I also have another DVD-A player and that also does not allow FF or FR on DVD-A`s.
Maybe the above will allow you to focus on the 99.999% that`s good about the Meridian and work around the .001% that`s not as good.

You are quite right it does say no repeat of DVDA my mistake, though in my defence it is not exatly shouted and is right above a block capitol heading ...REPEAT..ect on that page
Also on page 19 showing the OSD for DVDA the repeat icon is shown and labled which I inference or it implies that repeat is avaliable.
BUT you are right it does say no repeat in there.
No mention of no ff/fr but as you say no say it does work.
That fact that these player are so complicated and carrry many formates I would of hope for a better manuel. I think anyone reading the manuel would conclued that ff/fr is avaliable, especial as the distintion between talking about CD/dvda/v is not allways esialy made.
This mistake can be made, as in my case, shows that the manuel can be misunderstood.
Secondly this is a new formate and one of the first DVDA high-end playes out I would of thought that more careful thought on explaining the idiosyncracies of the medium might have been given. It would of saved me some worry.
I hope that meridain is not above a little constructive critasium form its customers.
