Is it normal for this sub to create an audible hiss from 8 feet way? I have it plugged into the same outlet as the rest of M gear. It also hisses without the audio cable plugged in. So that eliminates ground loops. I can turn down the gain knob to reduce the hissing, but by the time the hissing is gone, the subs output is not strong enough. I tunred the gain in Mconfig all the way to +6 so that I would not have to turn up the gain knob on the back of the sub as much. But it still hisses at the level that I want for music. Any ideas?

Sounds like a faulty amplifier to me. Have you tried shorting the input out (in effect ensuring the input is zero)?
Steve.

Co-incidentally, I recently noticed my SW1600 had a similar problem when I began using the analogue input. A clearly audible "low-frequency white noise" that went up and down with MSR volume. The noise disappeared if I connected the digital input, so I don't know how long it was like that.
I returned it to Meridian, and was repaired for ~150. It took a few weeks via Sevenoaks/Reading. Completely silent now.
If you're comfortable with electronic DIY, I found it straightforward to remove the (heavy) back panel, disconnect the speaker drive cable (note polarity!) and just send the panel, rather than the entire sub.

I returned it to Meridian, and was repaired for ~150. I take it that it was out of warranty? Welcome to the forum BTW.

Thank you very much, VirusKiller...
It was, I've had it quite a while - over 3 years. I think it was one of the first 1600 models? Early on, something resonated/buzzed inside at certain frequencies - THAT was fixed under warranty.
I've been quite happy reading all the posts over the years and have learnt things almost daily! I thought someone could benefit from my own SW1600 experience.
Must put pen to paper more often

Steve, Shorting the input does not reduce the hiss. Thanks.
