There was a hint a while back that video was coming but I think other things may have overtaken that project - including perhaps the whole question of Hollywood & legality.

When i asked the Sooloos video question back in Oct 09 to the Meridian marketing director at the manchester hifi show, he said there were obvious licensing issues with video support on Sooloos.

I understand you need a license to offer Bluray HD audio decoding.
But if you purchase a Bluray or DVD, surely copying it to hard drive is same as copying a CD to hard drive. i.e, as long as its for your own use, for greater convenience, and the original disc can be a backup.
But i guess its a little more complicated than that.

What i dont understand is if Popcornhour or Dune can sell mediaplayers, then why cant Meridian.
The content on the player is the responsibility of the owner, not Meridian?
I think the future seems to be hard drive based content on media players, not silver disc spinners.

Does anyone know if the Dune Prime 3.0 will play CDs ripped into Apple lossless format?

Thanks,

No idea but I can give it a try for you. It might be a day before I get back to you.

I just tried it and it does not work. So bad news, but I did a Google search for Apple Lossless to FLAC convertor and I got

http://www.dekorte.com/projects/shareware/SoundConverter/

Seems to be what you'd need.

The Dune needs some TLC to get setup but once you have it, it works nicely.

Jerry

Thanks for checking that for me Jerry. I am debating between the Oppo and the Dune. Leaning more towards the Oppo now with your info. The number of files to convert seems a bit daunting.
Thanks again.

Is Oppo a reliable Apple lossless player? 2ch Apple lossless vs. 5.1ch FLAC support?

Just use dBpoweramp batch converter. Set it going and leave it. You always have your original format. One of the easiest converters out there.

Crion - I currently have an Airport Express streaming Apple Lossless into a 68d. I use the IPodTouch to control it. Sounds great and great interface. Was planning on the Oppo for BR, DVD, SACD, and DVDA. Going with the Dune, all the Apple Lossless files would have to be converted and SACD and DVDA ripped in order to play - plus setting up either a NAS or dedicated server for storage. Just dont know if the extra work and expense would be really worth it.

Jerry - Thanks for the dBpoweramp tip. Still debating.

Hello Brian,
If you really enjoy the iPad/Touch interface to Airport express then by all means keep it. Dune is not anywhere near this convenient. What it has is simply the capability to keep your DVD-A/SACD rips living on as FLAC 5.1ch. Will it be worth it to rip it? I don't know how many discs we are talking about and only you can decide if it's worth Your time..

RIght and also I have a ton of HDDVDs- many of which are unavailable on BR- an example that pops to mind is Grand Prix. And my primary HDDVD machine died. So its nice to have the ability to play them.

Kaleidescape just introduced their new Blu-Ray capable player/importer.

http://www.kaleidescape.com/news/pr/PR-20100511-M-Class-Players.php

The downside: you need to have the original Blu-Ray disc in the player, to be able to play it from the networkdrive.
