I had a brief period of HD bliss with a Samsung LED tv. Unfortunately the noise floor of its incredibly badly designed PSU was higher than that of my DSP speakers - I could hear the damn thing buzzing over quiet bits!

That TV went back, as did my 32" CRT (to my brother in law). Since then, the family have been craning around my old 21" 4:3 B&O. This was a temporary measure 'till somebody made a very high quality 32" TV (which I'm willing to pay money for!). With only two LED sets, neither of which is suitable (one too noisy, and I've heard the Sharp isn't so hot on picture quality), I could really do with something cheap to tide me over. It's been months with that 21" set, and I'm still slightly amazed that no-one makes a great quality 32" set - plenty of big ones, but I want to get a projector for that. Chances are prices will stay high and old stocks pushed out till after the world cup, I guess.

Does anyone have an old 32-37" that has been sitting in a cupboard since they got their whizzy 50" Kuro that they want to sell cheapish? Bear in mind that new 1080p Toshes are �330 now. It doesn't need to be great quality (as long as it's HDMI equipped), it's just to tide me over till a 1080p local dimming LED comes along that doesn't sound like a failing PSU.

If you're somewhere I visit for work, then I can turn up with cash.

If you only need a 32" to tide you over, with great picture quality and very good built in loudspeakers, you could do a lot worse than a secondhand Loewe CRT model.

They go for peanuts on eBay, mainly because of the popularity of panel TVs.

Look for a later model like a Mimo or Aconda as they have better tubes, 3 scart inputs, 2 will have RGB and 1 will have YUV (component) input.

I have 3 sets, one bought new back in 2001, the other 2 for next to nothing on eBay.
Using a component source (DVD), the picture quality is exceptionally good.

They also have a very nice visual design, the matching stands are well made and complete the design.

You could stroll down to Richer Sounds and pick up a new Tosh 615 HD 1080p for around �290. It has what could only be described as a "bright" picture but is fine for bedroom use after you have migrated.

Alternatively try freecycle for a Sony FS70 36in CRT. They are enormously heavy and don't have HDMI so tend to go for peanuts but you will need two big blokes to help, beer for rewards and a estate car. Sorry, mine went to the in-laws.....

If you want quality why worry if its LED or not ? plenty of good uns about personally LCD's cannot produce a quick enough response time & can also look awfully overblead color reproduction-wise at times after buying a Panasonic 42 plasma I shall never look back smooth,detailed,real depth,proper black images etc.

Wise words from all of you. I've put myself between a rock and a hard place!

It needs to be a small set (one of the conditions for WAF with my DSPs all around the room), pretty much ruling out plasmas (which I'd quite like). The plan is to get a projector as well (but I need something that will throw a 91" picture from at least 5m away, pref 10 (long thin room).

I don't want to use the G98 for the kid's films - that's my toy! I've got a little Ion / Atom powered nettop with a TB packed full of films to offload it, but it's HDMI only.

I think the Tosh is looking like the best bet. I certainly regret giving my old 32" CRT away to my brother in law before properly checking that the Samsung was suitable. I got blown away by the picture quality (amazing compared to the LCDs I was checking at the time), and thought that the noise would go once it burned in. I half thought that it was an early production issue (I got one of the first), but a review on Amazon from Nov last year confirmed the exact fault that we saw.

Apparently new models from a number of manufacturers are due around March so possible further price drops on the cards for outgoing models.

Vizio has a 32" plasma. Don't know if any others do, but you may want to do a little Goggling to check before giving up your plasma dreams.
