Justin
My 596 tells me the drive is a 720 in the setup screen. Is the 710 the same thing? For a few quid more I'd go with a direct replacement if we can source one. Are you happy to let me know a contact for your agent I think I'll follow your lead, I'm saving my Yuans already!
I take it you found the link to Duncan's site at bottom right of the page?

ok, I had a 596 before component model before it had a 710 in it... they are very similar i think some of the g series have 710 in it also... but if it says 720 then get 720 ... I don't know if you have to load the correct firmware separately into the drive b4 you put it into the player ....I think that's the case display says lv18 and some other letters but anyway i wont attempt until I get the facts from this website....... I am pretty sure its in 2009 ,2003 sites comprehensively.... the ll be a 598 yoda here somewhere!

Thanks Justin,
From what I`ve been able to dig up, the 586 is based on the Toshiba SD-3000 player. I still haven`t found much information on that machine, but it could used the same mechanism.
Truth be known, in my simple 2ch analog system, the 586 sounds at least as good if not slightly better ( warmer ) than my 596. It better integrates with the 541, (comm. cable works and no remote control overlap) so I do not want to give up on it, even if it is not “pure” Meridian. I`m going to open it up this weekend and have a look.

i'd need a 710 drive, how many people need which drive? I think a group buy would be a good idea for this.

Thank you for this really informative thread. Please let us know how you get on with the firmware. I have a 596 with 710 drive and I could be very tempted to get a spare.
