A new toy has just emerged from Apple - providing Meridian owners with further options for storing music and video...

A Mac Mini Server, sporting 2 x 500Gb drives, 2.53Ghz Intel Core2Duo processor, and 4Gb RAM - priced at $999 (US), or 799 (UK).

Very overpriced unless you take advantage of the server software.
Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server retails at $499.

Nice bit of kit though.

Be nicer if they sold it with plain Mac OS X Snow Leopard for $400 cheaper!

That's not a problem, as you can buy a Mini DVI to HDMI cable - then add toslink for audio connection to your Meridian kit...

...plus MediaCentral software - http://www.equinux.com/us/products/mediacentral/index.html - and you've got yourself a cracking HTPC.

I'll second the recommendation for plex. I was recently introduced to plex at a friend's house and have been playing with it now on my 15" Macbook Pro, connected to my 60" Pioneer plasma. From a user interface perspective, I am highly impressed, certainly when compared to the Popcorn Hour A100's user interface. I haven't yet tried any HD material, just SD DVD and Netflix Instant Watch for the moment and its working quite well. I still need to do some further experimenting to make sure I'm getting the best possible image quality.

except for no audio over HDMI thus not taking advantage of the HD621. afaik only the appletv offers HDMI audio and video.

You can get an adaptor which pipes the SPDIF / TOSLink into the HDMI alongside the DVI video connection.

Not even Engadget have been offered a test of one these yet. Announced about 6 months ago, they are still trying to get it right, I believe

Interesting for some here if it works as advertised
