Hi All,

You might like to know that Richard fabricated a custom stand for my 5500HC a couple of years back - it's about 750mm high and brings the speaker up to eye/ear level (for me at 1m75). Used originally with 7ks, it now still works really well with my 8ks. Overall, I am still very happy with what it does and how it looks (still gets a good WAF vote!).

Sorry I don't have any photos to hand (am away on business) but I think Richard has some with the 7ks.

Cheers,

Andy

Richard and I are talking about custom stands for DSP33 as well, and he is great to do business with. Highly recommended.

Yep, that's mine. Blimey, the 7ks look SMALL compared with the 8ks!

Mentioning size and looking at the picture makes me wonder if the scale of the soundstage which could be produced would be mismatched with the size of the video display.

I find that I can turn up the volume much more when viewing on my projector than on my TV. It's just psychology, I suppose.

Malcolm,

Interesting observation - my system design and speaker layout/location is all around critical music listening, rather than for movies/TV (I'm an audiophile at heart). The screen size is fixed for the mo as I'm awaiting the right time to 'introduce' a projector, or as a min a 58/60/65" plasma. This wont be for a while I fear, as my Good Lady is still getting over the visual impact of the 8ks.

Actually, I use MusicLogic as a default DSP for TV/Sat listening, which produces a very Centre-focused output, so the L/C/R spread does not distract. For movies (maybe only 1-2 a month), volumes are always 'realistic' - guess we are just used to the relative sizes!

I'd just like to tell you about my DSP 8000 experience!

The guys at Number One Audio Consultants delivered a pair of 8000s for me to test in my own home.

Ever since HH2, I`d been thinking about moving down the active speak route. The incredible sound provided in what was not exactly a perfect environment amazed us all but, then again, it was driven by an 808. How would they sound in my home driven by my G98 and my 602?

For reference my current fronts are a pair of Mordaunt Short Performance 860`s complemented by a Tag McLaren Calliope centre driven by a 558, stiff competition indeed!

The speakers were delivered and unpacked and took up the most of one end of the lounge. I had to move my subwoofer as there was no room for it, “don`t worry, the 8000s go very low” commented Nathan from Number One.

I started with Audiophile Voices Number 1, my standard test disk, and initially tried Jackson Browne Running on Empty (high resolution), and War of the Worlds.
The results were astounding!

Everything I tried suddenly had a new soundstage, instead of performing in the small back room of the local pub, the artists moved onto the stage of the NIA. The sound did not just exceed the speaker box, it exceeded the room by some margin in all directions. The depth seems to go from 15 feet behind the speaker to 15 feet in front. It`s a strange experience to have Norah Jones singing inches in front of you. Also the musicians were carefully placed on this huge soundstage and played with a clarity, a control, and a power I had not heard before.

I had also mistakenly believed that I had gone beyond finding new detail in my CD collection, WRONG!!!

It was the same with DVDs, the opening of Top Gun rocked the room - without a sub woofer!

If any of you have Acoustic Songbook, Track 18 of disk 1, is the Charlie Hunter Band, with Norah Jones. It stars with one instrument and builds, it sounded amazing with the 8000s, I`m sure only Norah was actually in the lounge with me, the rest were in the garden, the hall, amazing.

I`d like to thank Nathan at Number One Audio Consultants for all his help and advice, I would strongly recommend them if you are in the Midlands and in need of a good Meridian dealer.

The only problems now are

1. How do I afford five 8000s?
2. How do I get she who must be obeyed to agree?

Harry

Great stuff Harry! The 8ks really bring the music to life, don't they?

Hi VK,

It was a wonderful experience!

I've just thought of another word I should have used, precision, everything was just so precise.

The only problem with two is that I will then need to keep the 558 to drive the other three channels, but it would be a start.

Hi Harry,

After the HH2 day, I had a graphite pair of 8ks on home demo.
SHMBO said they where "very big" when she phoned me after the installation.
However, after a week she said "they would be ok in silver and they make the [60 inch] screen look smaller and more in proportion.

RESULT !!! I know have a pair and a 7200HC to match.

So Harry, work on it; you can have them, trust me.

Regards,
Carl

PS.
If you went for a pair 8Ks, I could help you out with a centre I have a spare 5500HC wink

If any HHers want a demo in my modest sized room PM me.

I have my graphite 8Ks in a dedicated room with an 808i.2. I'm still treating the room to tame the bass. With each step, the resolution and enjoyment increase. The uninitated are simply blown away. My friends have significant others who are very unhappy with me.

Bill
