Hi
Can somoene give me the answer to this. My DSP5200's upsample to 96khz, if I put DSP 3100's as rears will the front pair still upsample. Do 3100's upsample. My dealer has a second hand pair 2.5 years old (I have not tested them as yet). I am tempted to use these as rears unless anyone knows any reason not too.
Regards Simon
Don't you just hate to buy something described as mint condition and you find what they actually meant was polo mint (with holes).

Upsampling in speakers is totally independant to upsampling in a processor. If you upsample in a processor then as long as you have 96/24 capable speakers, which both are, then the processor will upsample all round.
However, in the case of your proposed 3100's, these speakers, these speakers are capable of upsampling in their own right.

Thanks Ian
I have a pair of DSP5000c center speakers which I was going to use as rears. These are 18 bit. For obvious reasons I would like 24bit all round.

However, in the case of your proposed 3100's, these speakers, these speakers are capable of upsampling in their own right. Are we sure about that. If you look at the current datasheet for 5200 is clearly mentions upsampling several times. Where as the 3100 has no mention at all. I know you we can't always trust the specs but I'm curious how you know it has it? Not to confuse orginal question I agree with Ian that as long as it's 24/96 that's normally what matters most.

If the 3100's did not upsample would that that prevent the 5200's upsampling. Something like if using 18 bit on rear you would only be able in most cases set the system to 18 bit for all speakers 5imon

5imon No no no. Ian is correct. 18bit speakers have issues because they don't do 24/96 or 24/88 preventing the processor from upsampling (i.e. sending 24/96 or 24/88). When your processor is upsampling your 5200's are NOT.

Which DSP speakers are production-capable of upsampling from lower sample rates to 88.2 or 96?
All current loudspeaker models (with the exception of the DSP420) are capable of 1x - 2x upsampling.

Which is about as definitive as you get from Meridian, given that the answers were provided by Bob and Richard.

That would depend on what they mean by capable.
I'm capable of bungee jumping. I don't, though...

The 3100s were developed after the 8ks and 5k2s. Meridian has a very predictable modus operandi and I would be quite astonished if (a) they didn't upsample now and (b) they don't get apodizing upgrades.

You would think if the are "capable" with similar vintage DSP chips as 5200 they would have got it when 5200 got it. Actually, Bob said (or implied) in the CEDIA 2008 or CES 2009 Q&A that each product was developed and tested individually. The DSP for the 3100s will be different to the DSP for the 5200s, even if the chips are the same. And those per-product listening tests take time...
