Hi

My system consists of G61r, HD621 & Dsp5200's including centre. Rears to be added later.
Compairing to my old DSP 5000 speakers the new 5200's seem a little harsh.
I have bairly touched the surface with setting up, infact just attached the 5200s to G61 and running my media PC via optical to play music. With known audio tracks I listen too I feel the 5200's are harsher and appear to be light on base.
Whould anyone who has had new 5200's know if there is a run in period and will the sound change as time goes on.

Regards 5imon

What boundary setting were you using on 5000 and using now on 5200?

Are they in the same position 5000's were?

Hard to believe 5200's putting out less bass than 5000's.

Are they brand new?

Double check all drivers are ok.

Hi 5imon

I'd be very surprised at 5200s sounding harsh compared to 5000s (although if your 5ks were very old with tired tweeters...) Did you change to the G61r and 5200s at the same time, or was there a period of G61r + 5000s? If you have gone straight into new speakers and new processor, I wonder if it's the brightly lit mid in the G61r rather than the 5200s?

How do your sources sound when fed directly into the 5200s rather than via the G61r? Do you still have your 506 to try 506>G61r>5200 and 506>5200 for comparative purposes?

Cheers

I find connecting direct a bit harsher. G68ADV/861 seems to take the edge off.

But I agree with your point, how many variables did you change at a time.

And is the G61R properly configured. Maybe G61 has them set small with a non existent sub.

I'm surprised to hear this too. I own DSP-5000s, but was very impressed with 5200s on the several occasions I've heard them. I felt the 5200s were a major step above the 5000s with a much improved bass response.

Hi George & Mr Meridian

You have already given me some Ideas,

George.. I will check the settings today, I literally have only connected the speakers and done the very basics to get sound. Yes the system is brand new!

Mr Meridian.. yes I did change all at the same time, I have gone from 565/5000 to G61/5200's.

Unfortunatly I was not able to hold onto the CD player so at present I am only feeding my computer, Free sat & TV into the system.

Even so, I did get great results from my previous system (I did have it for many years and knew it inside out), and when doing AB test with known good material the sound difference between The 506 & Media PC I have were small.

That said, I am sure getting the best from these speakers is yet to come. This is only my first impression. I remember when I first had the 5000's they also did not impress immediatly, It took a few months of tweeking.

Due to work I get little time to play, so this may take a while. I am sure with a few ideas from this forum I will get the system sounding as exspected.

Thankyou
5imon

Hi 5imon

The 5200 is a very refined and articulate 5000 (also with better bass) so the difference in sound you are experiencing is likely to be the very different sound of the G61r compared to the 565. I'm reminded of Ian's comments a few years ago that each generation of processor has sounded more detailed than the last. I'd agree with that, and also personally feel that the G sound is noticeably different to 500 series. I'm sure it will come down to acclimatisation of your ears over the next few months!

Cheers

Hi 5imon,

I had DSP 5000 latest version before I bought 5200's. I was impressed the moment I turned 5200's on. They were brand new from the box. They are a significantly better than 5000. I kept 5000 for 1 month or so and put them as rear speakers. I did compare them many times with 5200 and The 5200 is clearly better.
At taht time, I still used 568.2 and 598.
This is my experience switching to 5200's.

Cheers,

Harry

Hi George

I ran a full setup of G61r (Type,s etc) and now have much better base. Infact the speakers don't sound so harsh anymore.

Next step is to do room correction, now I have more base its sounds like it is bouncing off the walls. Any suggestions on this would or course be appreciated.

Kind regards
Simon

You can check out the wiki for MRC tips.

http://www.meridianunplugged.com/wi...0Room%20Correction%20Tips%20and%20Tricks

First one listed is the simplest.

As far as general performance try to get speakers away from back and side walls.

Also don't rule out using boundary settings in the speaker.

List your full config in signature because advice depends on what you have, like if you have a sub or not and all your speakers etc.

And a reply with room size and photo helps too.

Hi again.

My system at present consists of
1. R/L DSP5200
2. Ctr DSP5200
3. G61R
4. HD HD621
5. Media PC as source (Bluray / DVD /CD etc)

Room Size approx
The room is made up of lounge area and a second half which is exstension.
The setup is in the lounge half. Speakers are situated about 6 feet apart, 2.5 feet from rear wall. There is a fireplace between the speakers but the speakers stand about 1 foot further forward than the fire place and six inches to the right and left of the fireplace right and left wall. The room is rectangular, the wall to the left speaker is about 2 feet away, no wall to the right of the right speaker. Centre stands in front of the fire place about 6 inches further back than right and left speaker. I sit around 13 feet away from right/left speaker & the room front to back is about 18.5 feet.

I have not yet tried room correction as I guess I need a Mic or sound meter. Can anyone suggest what is best or at least worked well for them.

Can I apply any settings without using an external device (Mic/Meter)just to get a feel if things will change.

I have noticed I get a resonance / boominess from base in the room that I didnt have with the DSP5000, I guess that is due to more base extension from these 5200's. I can actually feel the base. This of course is not with everything.
Eg. I watched the slumdog millionaire and most of the film the sound was perfect, only one part where there was a very low base beat, this was causing the room to resonate and tended to sound louder than it shoud have and was damping the speach. Even when volume was turned down there was still the resonance. I am hopeing room correction can remove this. The droneing sound appeares to be up in the ceiling area. It also happens on some music tracks. I also noticed it on michael jackson History DVD. MTV award music, this sounded great before with DSP5000's, but now causes the ceiling to resonate which dampens out the singing even at low volume.

Simon, I think you just need a basic Radio Shack type mic to Run Room Correction and there is plenty of info on the wiki.

From what you say, I think its well worth running MRC. After all, you have paid for it.

Cheers, Chris smile
