I'm hopefully moving house in 5 weeks or so. I was wondering if anyone in the South east had some DSP5200 boxes (pair 5200's and 5200hc) they they would not mind lending me for the duration of the move.

I would also be prepared to take the 5200hc box off someone's hands permanently as I think this speaker is going to end up being stored.

In the UK people do favours for people expecting nothing financial in return, although it is polite to either offer to return the favour somehow, or show gratitude in some other, often liquid, form.

I kind of hoped that use of a few boxes for a couple of days would have fallen into this category.

What Iv done on several occations when selling big or awkward stuff on eBay etc is get a cycle box you can cut to size needed they open out quite big.
Go to a local shop some of them are real quality thick cardboard try Halfords (round the back door by skip if their not so helpfull after they close) most shops will be happy to give them away cos they have to pay otherwise. smile

That's a good idea Scooby...I've used cycle boxes for big stuff (not hifi) in the past. The cardboard is very strong and with enough brown packing tape you can make a very robust package. It's also worth finding an upholstery supplier, as they sell slabs of the very dense foam which is used in the 5000/5500/6000 DSP boxes.

Cheers

When I returned my sub. to Velodyne I went to a local package distribution company and purchased a double skin cardboard box for about 2 pounds I also purchased 100 metres of 500mm wide bubblewrap(much more than needed) for about 17 pounds. Together they made a secure parcel.

I've never moved house before using professional removal firm.

Do people think it would be better letting the removal firm pack the bare speakers themselves and moving them in their way, which I think will mean that they are insured but would probably be a big hassle to get any repair, or would it be best to use a make shift solution in an attempt to prevent damage in the first place?

Ian,

If you use a professional company they will be insured, although you will need to deal with a loss adjuster, "well it's only a little damage to the corner, or "it's only a little hole in that drive unit", that little scratch could have been there before". Enough said!

I would get the correct boxes and packaging, then either you or a removal company can move them safely.

A stress free solution

Regards

Ian,
dont trust removal firm for that. I have had such bad experiences with electronics in the past . I am willing to borrow you my boxes but taking into account that i live a little far away from you the shipping will not be inexpensive :-(
