Hello all,

I need a little help setting up and understanding my system, and I'm hoping someone else has a Sony PS3 with their Meridian gear. I have the PS3 going via HDMI to a HD621 going via 3 x SPDIF MHR to a G68. The PS3 is set to output LPCM over HDMI.

1. The PS3 audio output options for LPCM are 2 ch, 5.1 ch, and 7.1 ch, at sampling rates of 44, 88, or 176 khz, and 48, 96, or 192 khz. Should I set these to the lowest sampling rate, assuming upsampling will occur in the HD621? And does the HD621 override the G68 and actually do the upsampling?

2. I do not get complete soundtrack playback on DTS ES 6.1 DVD's or DTS HD MA 6.1 BD's (its very quiet with some background sound but no voices). The G68 display says "MHR 2 ch" and defaults to the 2 ch movie DSP preset. As this is only with 6.1 (7 total channels) material, is the issue that the HD621 is not able to pass more than 6 channels to my G68 as configured? My simplistic understanding tells me the HD621 with 4 x SPDIF MHR can do 8 channels, but the G68 with a 3 x SPDIF can only receive up to 6 channels? Is there a planned firmware or other upgrade to the G68 to allow 7, 8 or more input channels?

Thanks!

Shut all 7.1 off and anything above 96khz off.

The PS3 will not upsample movies but it will upsample CD's. If I recall correctly there is not a seperate setting for CDs.

But you don't want to set it below 96 becuase that will downsample some BD discs.

Every BD movie I've played has played fine (30 ?) and almost every one has defaulted to a lossless format. I'm almost to the point of not bothering to check anymore because it has been on the correct format (best) on every disc.

Correct HD621 can only deal with 5.1 channels at the moment.

Re 2.: I had the same strange sound distribution when i set the PS3 up with the HD621 and G68. It was due to a mismatch of the 3 SPDIF cables between the the two Meridian devices; the labeling is confusing and so I had it wrong at first (see earlier discussion in the HD621 Setup forum).

George,

Thanks for the input.

Just to recap ... I'm still a little unsure:

The audio output options are 2 ch - 44, 88, 176 and 48, 96, 192; 5.1 ch - 44, 88, 176 and 48, 96, 192; 7.1 ch - 44, 88, 176 and 48, 96, 192.

You're saying to turn off everything above AND below 96 khz? So, basically set a fixed output at 96 khz for each type of stereo or multichannel input? But then the HD621 won't be doing any of the upsampling, right? Doesn't it max out at 96 khz? Also, if the disc is 48 khz, the PS3 is set at 96 khz and doesn't upsample movies, will there be any output?

Regarding your experience with BD's, I bet most if not all of your lossless encoded discs are 5.1.

One last thing, you said the HD621 can only deal with 5.1. Isn't it actually 7.1 capable (4 x SPDIF), and the G68 (3 x SPDIF) is the one that's not?

Thanks again.

No, leave 2 channel, and 5 channel on, 7 channel off.

Leave 44,48,88, 96 on and 176, 192 off.

If 96 is on, everything below that has to be on, on the PS3. You can't skip.

I'm sure most BD's I tried are 5.1. But if 7.1 do exist I'd suspect I've run into a couple.

But if you tell PS3 you only have up 5.1 it should mix it down to 5.1.

Yes G68 is more the limitation regarding 8 channels. But I don't think we know HD621 can do 8 channels either. Since there is nothing to test with.

George: Thanks for the info. That's very helpful. Any speculation regarding a 7.1 channel update for the G68? Firmware? New board?

Rogerwalk: Thanks for the tip. I will check the labeling and connections on the HD621.

Rogerwalk, do you happen to have a link for the HD621 setup forum? I can't seem to find it.

I think he meant the mega HD621 thread in this forum.

Rogerwalk, George:

I did find the post referred to above regarding the HD621 -> G68 connection, but there is conflicting info.

One post says: 1/2 ->D1, 3/4 ->D2, 5/6 ->D3

Another says: 1/2 ->D1, 3/4 ->D3, 5/6 ->D5

Which is correct?
