Interesting. Both release and beta firmware versions are current too.

If this works, there would be no need for a hardware mod.

As I understand it, it works. A hardware mod is more convenient though, since it stays through FW upgrades - which usually come rather frequently from Oppo. The FW hack needs to be done for each FW revision, easy if Oppo continues with the same internal structure and doesn't try to "fight" the hack, otherwise harder.

Interesting development. I wonder if a software solution makes a player any more vulnerable to potential AACS/BD+ checks than a hardware modification might? CRTProjectors.co.uk are offering modified Oppos now for about 600. They're also offering DIY install kits for 55 with no soldering required.

Yes, it does. It also makes it very vulnerable to changes in Oppo firmware. The safest bet is a hardware fix.

Paul

It has since been confirmed that Oppo's own firmware overrides any previous hacked firmware. I've been sent the instructions for installing a DIY mod kit and it is very straightforward; a simple matter of swapping out a ribbon cable to the main board.

I think it is what I will do, too. As soon as I find out the fate of my 568.2 from the Mothership I will get an MHR modified player from Gary in his powerbuy (I'm still debating the transport mods).
