I'm interested in opinions on this comparison. Particularly in folks that have owned or listened to the 7000s as I know lots of people own or have listened to the 5200s. The 5200 are SL, not .2s but are upgradable to SE. Either set would only be used in a stereo configuration and controlled by a 218.

Obviously the 5200 have the advantage of SL and the SE upgrade. But, if the assumption is that I would not upgrade them, what would that mean for the comparison? Let's also leave price out of this and just focus on sound quality - dynamics, soundstage, response, etc.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts...

If you foresee the opportunity to upgrade to SE, I would go that route everytime. They really are a huge step up.

I haven't owned 7Ks, so it's hard to directly comment, but they didn't really stay in the M line up for a long time.

Personally, if I was looking at legacy speakers, I'd say stretch to 6Ks if possible. They are a very different speaker to 5K2's of course, but offer tremendous bang for buck.

Regards
Greg

Maxwell,

I have listened to 5200s and owned a pair of 7000s. I enjoyed the 7000s very much. Much more substantial sound than 5200s. You should definitely listen to both if possible. I like full range speakers so I would go for the 7000s myself, even though they may not provide the last level of detail a newer DSP can provide. They were my second system speakers for years (living room, so got a lot of use). They stood up well to my DSP8000s, which were my first system at the time.

As always, trust your own ears. Good luck!

John

The 7000 is a under appreciated speaker. I owned them and loved them. I wish I still had them. Gcap is the proud owner of them.

If I had to pick between a 5200SE and the 7000 however, I would certainly choose the 5200SE. Full MQA, EBA, and a fantastic tweeter are an incredible mix.
