I have read through the thread and the chap in Germany seems to have success but it doesn’t explain if he had to remove the firmware from the new drive and replaced that with the firmware from the damaged drive.

Can I ask if the firmware on the drive itself will be accepted by the player (whatever firmware is on the ROM drive)?

Reading the Meridian section confuses this issue, as I read it that if the firmware is different on the DSL drive then it won’t be accepted. Any advice?

If you replace like with like (i.e. DVS-720 with DVS-720), the unit should work. It will just be a case of functionality... For example, it could be that you need to press stop before ejecting a disk as otherwise the motor will keep the disk spinning.

The specific drive firmware seems to control the finer details as such.

There seems to be some further debate on Linn and Arcam forums as their units used the same drives (but different firmware).

I've migrated from a DVS-720A in a G98 to a DRL-200 and the unit works fine but you must press Stop before you eject, otherwise a spinning disk is ejected and gets scratched up. I've got a Toshiba drive in my 800v2 as this is the only drive I could find that worked. It supports CD/DVD and even DVD-A but there is no display on the LCD to show track / time details.

If you want full functionality as Meridian intended, you need to replace like for like (including firmware versions).

Good luck.

Well this is a confusing one I’ve updated the Meridian firmware to 1.89 around an hour ago and since I’ve done this the drive plays CDs (only played one so far so may be early days), but it is playing them - don’t get it really?

If anyone has any ideas as to why this should suddenly play a CD after upgrading firmware, it wouldn’t play any before and it’s now playing ok? Fingers crossed I’ll let people know if it keeps playing them in a couple of days.

Playing R.E.M. “New adventures in HIFI” this DVD player is certainly doing that!

Will it play DVDs as well?

If it does I wonder if it is a PSU issue?

Fingers crossed for you that it continues to work.

If not, look at replacing the PSU and changing the caps on the PSU board.

I don’t play DVDs on it, but it’s playing all the CDs I am putting in it without event - quite a surprise to be honest.
