Guys,

I would like to get the best hi res streaming of Tidal etc. into my system.

What are my options? Would you consider a Meridian 210?

Any Help Greatly Appreciated!
John

John

I think it kind of depends on how much you want to spend and also which interface/app you want to run the streamer with.

I think the Meridian 210 would be great however, I have no experience directly with the native app for that and I'd probably consider Roon if going for that option which itself incurs a cost (albeit one that most feel is well worth it).

I've used a Bluesound Node2i before with a G61R which was also great, a lot of people like this unit, it's not super expensive and the app is great, integrates really nicely with Tidal and would work fine with your setup I think.

If you want to spend more than this there are lots of options, personally I currently use an Auralic Aries G1 which I like, maybe worth a listen to if you can arrange it. In summary Id say if you are going to use Roon then go with the 210 (or a 218), if you aren't going to use Roon check out all the normal names a quick google search will throw up, but the Blusound is a great place to start.

One side point... if you ever think you might upgrade to the current DSP range then there are some benefits of a 210 or 218 in your configuration because you will be able to get authenticated MQA decoded in the device and then rendered in the speakers, this might sway your decision.

The Meridian 210 has integral links to Roon and Spotify.

Although there is provision to enter the direct URL for external providers, entering ‘Qobuz’ doesn’t work. Although I haven’t tried it, I suspect Tidal wouldn’t work either.

If you have the budget, accessing Tidal via Roon on the 210 is the way to go.

Alternatively, adding a USB HDD/SSD to a Meridian 210, plus an app like ‘MConnect’ to your tablet, will enable access to Tidal.

The Meridian 218 can also be used for accessing Tidal via Roon. However, unlike the 218, the 210 is RAAT oriented.

For what I think is the price is for a 210, you could get a dedicated NUC, s/h Explorer v1 and a Roon subscription. Or, if its just Tidal you are after and already have a PC/Mac of sorts and that would fit in box wise, you could just do it with that (maybe a better DAC, again Explorer v1) and Tidal on its own.

Hi John, regarding the 210, it is an amazing device.

I have been waiting for something like that from Meridian for a long time, and it finally arrived at affordable price.

The sound signature is like any other Meridian devices, matching the same rich and coherent sound. Even a friend of mine, another Meridian fan, likes is more than the referent 800 DVD player.

Meridian has not provided a proprietary application yet, but it is easy to control it with other UPnP applications. I have not decided which application to use permanently, because surprisingly they sound differently. I have tried HiFi Cast, BubbleUPnP and mconnect, and so far HiFi Cast is my favourite. It is still a mystery for me how the controller could interfere with the sound quality, it is probably linked to setting the right DLNA protocols for bit perfect sound reproduction, and I will appreciate if someone with more knowledge explains that.

In terms of the different sound sources, I have tried Spotify, Qobuz, Tidal, DIY Audio Server with HDD and USB flash drive, and the sound quality follows the list, as the local UPnP server is the best.

I will be interested in more people sharing opinion about this interesting device.

Kind regards,
Galin

If you already have a PC or Mac, installing the modestly priced Audirvana is another solution. It will communicate with the Meridian 210 over your home network via UPnP, and will handle Tidal admirably

Nice- it looks like Audirvana supports MQA. I wasn't aware of this program, it looks like a great option.

Am I right in thinking that the 210 can't decode an MQA track from Tidal without Roon or some other hardware/software solution?

Incorrect: my 210 also renders and decodes my MQA CD’s that are stored on its attached HDD.

But for Tidal where the majority of MQA files are available wouldn’t you need a streamer as the 210 doesn’t stream Tidal natively?

The 210 can access Tidal 'natively' (without the need for a Core), by using mconnect lite app, via UPnP

Adding to Rick’s comment, Audirvana (recommended by Meridian) also facilitates Tidal playback of MQA files via UPnP.
