For the past year I have been foolishly listening to my 218 and 3200’s thinking I’m getting the full MQA decode and recently realised it is only the first unfold. So in a desperate attempt to finally listen to MQA fully would this be possible using a RCA to 3.5mm into my M80’s analogue in?

Regards
Danny

Yes it would be MQA with the appropriate file but I am not sure what you would discover, I would suggest a demo of DSP5200SE’s or the 7.2k or 8k variants either at home or at a dealer who can demonstrate them using Roon, then you can evaluate full MQA against the first unfold.

When listening to what you thought was full MQA were you happy with the sound, I would take the first unfold via the 218 to the DSP3200’s over full MQA to the M80.

YMMV

I was happy with the sound but not blown away to be honest, felt somewhat disappointed, and found myself siding with the MQA critics but now I have an optimism because I’ve not been listen to MQA all along. I have been comparing the first unfold of an MQA track to its 92/24 FLAC counterpart and they sounded identical which points to the full MQA surely sounding superior when I get thto chance to hear it.

I had the chance to get a pair of 5200SE’s on here last year at a good price and decided to go for the 3200’s now I’m wondering if I made the right choice in the long term.

Do you fell there is a significant difference between a first unfold and full MQA decode?

Danny

There is a difference but only you can decide if it is worth it, probably the biggest factor is the quality of the original master.

I have an outbuilding in my garden which houses my 218 and 3200. I’d like a 218 headphone based system for my living room, I like Lehmann Audio headphone amps, had some experience with them before and really like them, but I have been told adding interconnects and amp to the 218 would undo all the MQA effort?

In your other thread I was simply suggesting that the downstream components (depending on the quality of the interconnects and other components) will start to affect the ‘integrity’ of the MQA signal.

In a Meridian system that integrity is maintained by the signal being kept in the digital domain until it reaches the speakers + the advantages conveyed by the electronics and Be tweeter in the SE speakers. Other manufacturers take the analog MQA output from the (e.g. 218 or 818) into high quality analogue power amps (e.g. Meridian 857) and speakers, so everyone’s experience will vary.

In your system, whilst you don’t have a full MQA decode, you have the advantage of keeping that first unfold in the digital domain until it reaches the speaker. Going MQA from the analogue output on the 218 into the M80 will involve an A/D conversion and that will also affect the ‘integrity’ of the MQA signal _ ultimately it’s up to you decide if that sounds better or worse than the 218 directly to the DSP speakers.

Also, remember that you need to be looking at good source material (as Virus Killer suggested).
