Hi All,

I am thinking to get a pair of DSP7200SE or DSP5200SE as I want to simplify my system and maximise the potential of the Tidal MQA.

I believe DSP7200SE is better than DSP5200SE in term of spec and power etc, but how about the sound quality, any comment?

I have tried DSP7200SE at the local dealer, but they don't have DSP5200SE for demo.

Also, are they Class AB? I cannot find any information online.

Thanks

Hi

I've had both - and they are both very good. I feel that the most obvious benefit of the 7200s is deeper and more controlled bass. I have mine in a 5.1 system using a G65 and 218 (for MQA).

What size room are you going to put the speakers in? Mine are in a room 3.5 metres by 4.5 metres. The 7200s are quite deep speakers and mine need to close to the wall in my room so that the door can open etc. This was much less of an issue with the 5200. I'm sure others will join in.

Cheers
Tom

Yes.
The cabinets of 7200SE are much better built than the 5200SE.

I've not compared them against each other, although I came from the DSP5000's and can only say you won't be disappointed with the 7200SE's. I'm now going through a similar thought process about whether I should be moving to the 8000SE's!

The journey never ends, it's just the tolls get higher!

Yes but the 5200SE's are incredibly good in a small room IMHO it is far more effective if you match the speaker to the room.
I have listened to several installations of 8Ks and been unimpressed, even though Bob extolls the virtues of 8Ks in a telephone box.
However 5200SE have never failed to impress in small to medium sized rooms. JMPOV.

When SE DSP speakers were launched, I was fortunate to hear all 3 varieties in one place, though not in the same rooms. I can honestly say that the DSP5200SE were night and day better than the non-SE version and that was a side by side comparison. The 8KSE didn't sound particularly impressive, but the room they were in was not your typical 'domestic' room, and it was a very large space. Without a doubt, the sweet spot was the sound produced by the 7200SE. It was tighter, smoother, more controlled and more emotive than the 5200SE. Room sizes for the 5200SE and 7200SE were similar, as was the furnishings. I would happily swap my 5200SE for 7200SE, but my listening room is typically small (5m x 4m) and I don't have the spare cash.

I had a very similar experience to TKimages, the original MQA demos. 5200SEs but I insisted they put the 7200SEs on. Huge difference, night and day. That’s why I’m waiting for 7200SEs but not been tempted by 5200SEs!

7200s have separate internal heads, same theory as 6&8ks. Very different cabinets, mass, scale etc.

We all have to cut the cloth to suit the contents of our wallets, and IMO 5200SEs represent the best bang for buck since the advent of DSP5Ks all that time ago.
I had a visit recently from an owner of both 5200SEU and 8KSEU and his comment was that my 5200SEs sounded better than his. This should only be down to the room and I believe carpets and dry lined construction make a huge positive difference to what we audibly receive. Reflections are minimised to reduce the need for room correction / treatment etc..
New homes built in the last 30 years have their benefits.
Currently listening to Foy Vance Live at Bangor Abbey and if I close my eyes I am transported to another place and time, wonderful.

I couldn’t agree more, in my experience dry lined walls work really well without needing much additional treatment.

Super happy with my DSP5200SE. Probably some of the best speakers you can buy right now for the size. Just little bundles of joy. DSP5200SE vs DSP7200SE i think also comes down to the size of the room you want to play them in, I know Meridian themselves recommend speakers based on room size. DSP7200SE and especially DSP8000SEs can be monsters in a small room. In terms of bang for the buck you cant go wrong with a pair of DSP5200SEs.

Many thanks for all comments.
My room is about 5mx 3m.

How about the Amps? Are they class AB?

Thanks again

Eugene
