Hi all

Any ideas on this

Devolo DLAN 1200mbps no issues - power line network runs fine. ID41 on my 861 showing up all OK

Now, switch the power lines to the new one - the Magic 2.4g ones and the ID41 vanishes.

All other end points visible just the same no issues.

Swap back to "old" power lines and ID41 re-appears.

Any ideas?

C

Your new setup is not passing multicast packets. May be an option to enable something like IGMP snooping, or may be a rethink.

You may get away with keeping the old powerline adaptor that was connected to ID4x as it doesn't need to be fast (and may even be better off with a slower connection) and once multicast packets are on the powerline network, fingers crossed they will flow freely out.

Hopefully old and new is compatible? [edit] alas not.

Ditto multicast is a necessity for the Sooloos and Roon protocols to work properly and some (much more than should be the case) home networking equipment doesn't support it well.

As Ian says, look to see if there is a way to turn this on in device settings or return the kit, if you are able.

Thanks

The old powerline in same network doesn't really work, and actually the main reason was to improve the speed of connection between ID41 and QNAP core - which it does - giving 1.6 Gbps between the two, if only it could see it!!

I'll have a dig around on Multicast and see what we can find.

Cheers smile

You don't need to improve speed between ID41 and QNAP - QNAP and something else maybe, but not single ID41. ID41 is deliberately a 10Mbs device, it doesn't need speed, even 100Mbs is way faster (around an order of magnitude, so even multiple ID41's will work on a 10Mbs network) than it need be. It's slow because it doesn't need to be any faster and it keeps higher frequency signals out. 1.6Gbs doesn't bring anything to the party.

I agree but unless you are running a dedicated network for your Sooloos/Roon system it is worth remembering other network connected devices will use bandwidth TV, phones, PC’s, iPad etc. some of the usage will be in the background without you being aware eg automatic updates, backups, so although 10 Mbit will be ok on paper and in general use 100 Mbit main network would be my preference, the ID41 being 10mbit will force an unmanaged switch port or managed switch set to auto negotiate down to 10 Mbit.

Oh I think that information is a bit out of date. Even a cheap $50 switch will buffer the 1500 bytes from the 10M port and then send them at 1G over the 1G port. It's only hubs that used the lowest common denominator and you'll be hard pressed to find one of those still around.

So maybe try putting a switch between the ID41 and the powerline adapter. It might not be multicast at all: might be it refuses to support 10M!

Unfortunately a lot of switches have problems with 1Gbit --> 10Mbit UDP transitions, and they simply don't work with Meridian Sooloos endpoints.
