Hi

My AC200 has completely died suddenly. This happened previously to my MC200 and a replacement power supply fixed the problem.

Any thoughts as to whether this could be a cause (ie is this a known problem) and where I might get hold of a replacement power supply?

If the unit requires a major repair it might be worth ditching and getting a 218 or 210?

Hi,

Given the likely price of a repair, it’s probably worth the cost of purchasing another power supply. Try iFi-audio. Have you got a little Multimeter so you can check the output from your current power supply.

Brian,

many thanks for taking the time to respond. Good idea re multimeter to validate power is the issue.

Will look into IFI - although note it is rated at 1.8amps at 12v so bit worried it might not have enough juice (one that came with ac200 rated at 2.4amp). Have you tried it with with Meridian equipment?

Hi,

There are plenty of 12V 3A supplies on Amazon for a quick try. That’s a fair comment about the required capacity - the AC200 data sheet says <= 300mA and the power supply on mine is 2.0A. I do happen to have an iFi-audio 12V supply around, so I’ll give it a go tomorrow.

If the connector is the same size try the one for the MC200. If it works then get a properly rated power supply for the AC200

Meridian Prime Power Supply outputs 12v 0,5A; Meridian Prime Power Supply.

The Meridian Prime Power Supply is also ideal to power other Meridian products to maximise their performance, including:
Meridian Director, Meridian Direct DAC, Meridian AC200, Meridian Explorer, and Meridian Media Source 200.
Why is the included wall wart 12v 1.8A?

Meridian aren't famous for accuracy. I'm no EE but 0.5A is a little feeble...

AC200 is a little flakey, display problem etc. Mine behaves erratically, which is a shame as I like it. When it falls over ( a few months I'd guess), it's in the bin. Nice form, good functions, flakey.

Perhaps you should send it to Mr Tech Guy for a look over? Sounds like its wall wart is also going off.

Or you could just give it to me...

I presume a look over would be uneconomic, let alone a repair.

I've never seen a SMPS of this sort fail? 12v, single voltage, that would be unforgivable. I've a drawer wiith 30 SMPSs in from old gadgets, never had an issue with any. Meridian PSs do go but I'm assuming these are multi voltage and slightly technical.

Open minded as always then? I think many might raise an eyebrow at your casual expectation of throwing a £1000 item in the bin...

Cheers
George

I generally base my expectations on past experience. I've had things fixed before, I know the hourly rate...

It's not a £1000 item. It does cause a fair amount of confusion when people refer to list prices rather than their market value (especially newcomers who don't know any better). This is a £250 item, if I spent £150 repairing it, I would have a £250 item. Still flakey.

More out of disappointment than casualness.

Thanks for the suggestion. Tried the MS200 power supply and its working!
Looks like the wall wart gave up the ghost. That’s now the second Meridian power supply that has failed since I bought my system.

Will see if I can get a replacement - thanks for the suggestion of a ifi brian sounds like it should have enough juice based on other posts.
