I have recently treated myself to a 218 and wish to control it using a MSR or MSR+ (I have choice of either) and need a compatible IR receiver. The dealer I bought the unit from gave me a spare receiver, but I cannot get it to work.

Could I please have advice on either, may there be something simple I should be doing to get going with the current receiver, or have advice on which receivers on the market definitely should work?

Thanks

The Meridian G12 works without issue. Anything else is mostly not worth the trouble. How much is your time worth? Spending a couple of days fiddling around without success has a cost. Use the G12.

Thanks Bruce,

I am minded to do just that.

But what is MSR2? Is it a current device or legacy? I understand it comes with an IR receiver, presumably at the end of a cable?

Hi

The MSR2 is the new system remote, in a conventional “wand” style format, ie it now looks like every other TV or DVD remote control you have lying around. Not sure why it would have an IR receiver unless it’s a learning remote like the MSR+

Cheers
George

I’ve seen the MSR2 advertised on eBay for circa £120.

If it does the job and that is the RRP, then why spend £155?

Quite frankly, the “wand” aesthetic would be preferable to the rather boxy conventional Meridian remote.

Duncan’s info informs it includes an IR receiver.

I'm not sure if you mean "why pay £155 for a G12 when £120 for an MSR2 will do instead?"

If that's what you meant, both items do different jobs. The IR receiver in the MSR2 won't be to receive, then pass those signals along to another device. It's basically an MSR+ in a conventionally shaped remote control. You'd still need the G12 hard wired to your 218 to pick up the IR signal from the MSR2.

Cheers

George

Edit: Having looked at the MSR2 "manual" again, I don't think my assertion in italics above is necessarily true. There's no mention of it having any learning capability, but then there's no mention at all of it having an IR receiver. I may have misunderstood where you're coming from on this, so I'll say no more until I'm sure of a) what you want, and b) some facts about the MSR2!

Hi all,

Re the MSR2 and the reference to an IR receiver, I think I am guilty of wishful thinking. Probably the device’s receiver is in the device to receive signals from third party remotes.

But there is a clue in the MSR2’s user manual, namely the “clear” function, that I will try.

Otherwise, so long £155!

Cheers

I think the confusion stems from this statement on the Meridian page:

It's the Meridian products that may include an infrared receiver not the MSR2. Perhaps the word includes should have been include?

Yes. Almost certainly a case of the difference between knowing your shxt and knowing you’re shxt. I despair at the lack of precise language these days / ever.

Can't you run a 218 from the Meridian Control app on your phone or iPad?

I bought 2 MSR2's earlier this year and they did not include a external IR receiver for use with Meridian products which do not have IR receivers such as the 218.
