I’ve contacted Meridian to sort things out.

According to Meridian there is possible to play DSP3200s in full-range and compliment with a DSW sub (unknown how, set Sub off?). In the DSW sub you can, with a speakerlink update cable, activete a crossover. Still only Sub1 or Sub2!

So with that in mind;

DSP3200 full-range
DSW SUB 80Hz and below

To do anything else a Processor is needed.

With both speakers and sub playing 45- 80Hz I think the frequency response in that area will be a little bumpy. Not the best of solutions, in this price range. I think a company in Meridian’s caliber should handle this better!

Actually, I was told by someone at Meridian a few years ago that the more recent sub crossovers were the first that they got completely right...

VK,

Hmm what do you mean by completely right? I guess the filter is great but the lack of settings to match with different kinds of Meridian speakers sucks.

And “the most recent..” ? Is there different revisions of the newest DSW besides the older DSW2500 etc?

FWIW, I hooked-up my B&W PV-1 active subwoofer to my Meridian 218.

Even though the PV-1 outputs 500 watts Class D, is capable of 21Hz, with variable manual frequency adjustment, I couldn’t discern any benefit from deeper bass compared to my M6’s on their own for music.

My Mac can go all the way to XI - Mac user since 1988 - Meridian owner since 1993.

Music: M6, 218, 210, 504, 506.2, AC12, SBT, LMS | B&O H8
Movies: Loewe Bild7.55, ATV4K, B&W PV-1

Hi

It was always RELs contention that a properly set up sub would yield the most obvious benefits further up the range, rather than just bass per se. When I had their Stentor 3 (which I think Cliff uses too?) it definitely gave greater solidity and sense of space to music without sounding like it had added any noticeable weight. Imaging was better too. The difference to movies was definitely more noticeable (DVD at the time, pre Bluray) with much greater impact and depth evident. The processor was a 568.2, and the sub was set to come in as the mains were rolling off (6ks at the time)

If you still have that PV1, maybe a few enjoyable hours to be had pottering around to see how you would find it, now that you have really acclimatised to the M6s?

Just a thought!

Cheers

George

My PV-1 is hooked-up to my Loewe, as a 2.1 system (only for when I watch movies).

I have played around with different subs over the years (RELs, Meridian, B&W, Velodyne) and with all of them I have taken the view that if I could hear the sub separately from the main speakers (regardless of the size of the mains) then I had the sub gain and/or the crossover frequency too high. I don't know whether Meridian's 80 Hz crossover point falls off linearly below that frequency, but 80Hz with a suitably restrained sub level has generally worked well for me (although my SW5500 was hard to tame because of its rather poor internal resonances). Much classical music has very little bass and my principal objection to DSP8000s is that I find they have too prominent a bass spectrum which I can't control adequately even with room correction. That is why I prefer my DSP5200s with a DSW - I can get more control where I want it.

Cinema: 861v8, ID40, UHD722, 800v4, DSP5200SE(2+C), DSP3300(4), DSW, + various recorders and streamers.
TV+Music: MS200(x2), Explorer2, QNAP TS253A, DSP33(2), 3xC10s, Ensemble, TwinStore, 218.
Music: All Quad incl ESL63.
Kitchen: AD88 (bluetoothed via i80 dock).
Spare: 101, M2(2), 104 Tuner.

Pretty much. As I understand it -- pre-DSW -- the phase was never quite right. I don't have more details; I just know that the recent crossovers are a lot better.

Caveat: the Meridian person *may* have been referring to the crossover in the 8x8, but I think that it was a more general comment. One of the things that M tried to do around the time of the DSW was to make the systems as plug-and-play as possible.
