Hi all,

I have just upgraded to DSP6000 96/24 and was wondering if anyone could help me out with updated firmware please?

Before I move on my DSP5000 I'd like to update the firmware also for the new owner.

I recapped the 5000s and the difference was huge, in fact I am rather disappointed with the bass of the 6000s so I suspect they need a recap. I can also hear mains hum from the mid drivers which confirms my suspicion that the 6000s need some TLC. As they are heavy and I'd hate to have them in bit's while I put together a cap list, can someone help me out with a cap list please?

Considering replacing the ferro fluid also but not sure if there is specific type or density I would need?

Thanks again

Steve

I presume it goes without saying to discharge the ps caps before working, 6ks ps caps stay charged a long time. Newer tweeters make a difference, if you’re changing ferrofluid, presumably you know what you’re doing.

Hi, I fully recapped the 5000s and they sounded superb afterwards. I replaced the tweets with h1212s but I really like the sound of the m originals on the 6ks so thought an oil change would do them good if they come apart as they should do. Interested to see what the new xover is like with new firmware though.

Hi,

To re-cap a pair of DSP6000's (or 5500 / 7000's), you will need the following:

For the amp boards:

4x 25v 1000uf
4x 16v 1000uf
8x 10v 100uf
6x 50v 10uf

For the PSU boards:

12x 63v 1000uf

For the reservoir capacitors:

8x 63v 10000uf

Having re-capped a number of DSP5500's and DSP6000's, I can definitely say that it is THE most cost-effective upgrade you will ever make to your DSP speakers.
The improvement in all areas is clearly audible and definitely worth the work involved.

If you need any hints or tips, please feel free to drop me a PM. I'm happy to offer a re-capping service to any fellow HH's.

Cheers,

Steve

Thank you very much, do you happen to have the cap list for the DSP boards and comms also? On the 5ks I did the lot.

I assume load resistors aren't a concern on the 6ks?

Steve

Hi Steve,

I have re-capped the DSP board on an 18bit DSP6000 and it did not seem to make much difference to the sound. It seems that the amplifier boards benefit far more (probably due to heat) from a re-cap. I don't have a list of the capacitors I changed but must presume that they must have been very similar to the amplifier boards as I don't recall any special orders.

The load resistors shouldn't need any attention but its always worth casting your eye over the boards to look for any signs of burning or charring, just in case!

If you're changing the reservoir capacitors (or doing any work on the amplifier boards), remember to discharge the reservoir capacitors before commencing any work as they can pack a nasty punch!

Hope all goes well with the works.

Cheers,

Steve

Hi Steve, I've probably got some caps left over from the 5k to do the DSP boards.

I used Panasonic FR for amps and Nichicon UW for the PSU. Any recommendations?

Any idea where I can get firmware from without dragging them to a dealer?

Thanks for the advice so far, much appreciated.

Can you drop me a PM with a quote for you to recap in case time isn't on my side.

Steve

Can someone help me with firmware please?

I'll make a £20 donation to a charity of your choosing as a gesture for your kindness?

Hi Steve,

PM sent with regards to the re-cap.

Please find a friendly HH dealer who can supply you with the firmware.

Good luck,

Steve

Hi,

Firmware should be available from your local dealer or failing that I suggest you contact one of the HH friendly dealers that post on here.

I'll PM you their contact details, I'm sure someone will be able to help you.

Carl

Hi Steve,

I went with Nichicon Ultrafine Golds for the 5000s and mostly Panasonic FM series caps for the 6000s. I can share my parts list if it would be useful.

Best,
John

I am about to undertake this on my 5500, thank you swpnt for the detailed tips!

As it sits I have ordered Panasonic FM, I'll do the amp section and will have a look at the value of the caps in my PSU when it's open.

Should I bother with the PSU replacement caps, from what I have read all benefits are from the amp section or would you recommend just doing them anyway?

In regards to the larger 63v 10000uf ones what are the options people have used? Looking at the Nichicon Golds it's a little over $200 AUD for the set so if there's a cheaper option that is a not going to explode or if they are something that's not really necessary to swap out I would like some advice.
