I recently had an extended (several months) home demo of an 861v4/LPS/ID40 running parallel to my 818v3 in the same room through my 7200.2. My conclusion was that the 861v4 is a very nice endpoint indeed, but the 818v3 has an extra level of refinement, sounds more natural, and has a certain ‘magic’ to it that the older endpoint lacked. This was all in 2-channel Direct, mind you. With blind testing too (which wasn’t needed, it turned out - the conclusion remained the same).

So if George concluded that the 861v4 was better than the 218 in a DSP setup, this leaves the 818v3 at the top of the Meridian food chain with regards to 2-channel DSP feed.

I’m extremely dubious that MQA sounds the same regardless of the delivery hardware, any more than PCM does. Some of you may recall a couple of years ago I spotted a default setting in Roon had changed the way MQA was delivered to my 818v3 purely by noticing something was amiss listening to it. It turned out that the new default setting in Roon had Roon itself performing the first unfold instead of the 818v3 performing the unfold. Unchecking this setting restored the sound quality I was used to.

SO, in my system Roon/Nucleus is doing the first unfold with the 218 is doing the second and feeding the signal to the speakers that are full MQA compatible.

I really have embraced streaming and though have many many MP3's loaded on my server I will usually select the Tidal version if available and I almost never spin a disc anymore nor do I own a turntable.

I do appreciate resolution and to my ears while the 8k with the 'SE' upgrade is highly resolving there is still a little room in the top octave where in my room the speakers roll off pretty early...

Did you set up Roon specifically to do the first unfold as by default Roon would set up to allow the 218 to do the first unfold and render.

I guess if a 384 MQA signal was sent to the DSPs that would require a 3rd unfold 😀

In Roon what does the signal path show?

That’s the zone, did you click on the link I posted? Try taking a screenshot of the signal path when you are playing an MQA file to the 218 zone and posting the image.

In my experience, this is where the 818v3 will start to make a difference. It has effortless resolution and opens up the top end and bass (all without being fatiguing in any way). Honestly, with 8KSE you at least owe it to yourself and your speakers to get a home demo. The more you live with it over time the more you appreciate it.

The 818v3 is really something special. For me, with a legacy system, it was still a dramatic step up. There is one on Audiogon asking $5,250.

I see that there is also an 818v2 on Audiogon at around half that much, maybe that is something to consider as well.
