Which codec will sound best, Dolby Atmos or DTS HD 5.1/7.1? This is for a Meridian system: Oppo>HD621>861>DSP speakers. NB there is no Atmos processing other than that provided by the Oppo. Thanks.

As I understand it, decoding in the player for an Atmos soundtrack gives essentially the same result as if it were Dolby True HD audio.
Previously, Dolby HD offered a max bit rate of 18 Mbps while for DTS HD MA, it was up to 24.5 Mbps on BRs.
I don’t know if this has changed with the advent of Atmos or indeed if you would notice any difference with the average movie soundtrack.

IMHO, I would say the care with which the soundtrack has been mixed is likely to have the biggest influence on SQ. So basically, you may just have to try both.

Main system - Sources (Kodi-HTPC, Vero 4k, FireTV, Sat) into Trinnov Altitude 32 (8-16) (+Roon), Trinnov Amplitude 8 amp & Vivid Audio (Giya G3, V1.5) and REL Stentor III speakers. Others: F80 + Raspberry Pi and other Pi systems.

As I understand it, the Oppo cannot decode Atmos. It can provide it as a bitstream to an Atmos receiver (which the 861 is not). Indeed the instructions for enabling Atmos require disabling any decoding and processing in the Oppo so that it outputs the original, raw Atmos bitstream so the receiver can handle it. How to enable Atmos on your Oppo.

The HD621 is going to advertise to the Oppo that is supports 7.1 (or 5.1 for an 861v4). So the Oppo isn't going to try and send it Atmos anyway. The Atmos signal is data on top of an existing stream. It's possible to have Atmos on top of non-HD compressed stream, for example (e.g. Netflix has Atmos content, but its not 24Mb HD!). So without Atmos, you're getting whatever is underneath. If a disc has Atmos, it's probably on top of the best format possible, so selecting the Atmos soundtrack and letting the Oppo pull out the 7.1 and send it to the HD621 is the way to go.

Disclaimer: I'm not an audio engineer, so everything above could be internet hearsay.

Thanks for the extra information. So it seems as if selecting an Atmos codec for a non-Atmos system does not bring any benefits and is probably best avoided?

It doesn't matter. You'll fall back to what is supported, usually TrueHD.
If there's a second track on your source, say DTS-HD MA it might be slightly different and could be better or worse. I usually just leave the default track on.
